Things to do in Clare

What to do

Any weather Best on a dry day

An hour or two

  1. Doolin Cave Any weather

Doolin Cave has the Great Stalactite as its main sight. The underground tour suits a wet day. On a short Clare holiday, make this the cave outing and leave room for the village instead of immediately adding Aillwee.

Read the cave's access information before booking, especially for anyone who finds enclosed spaces difficult.

  2. Ennis Friary Dry day

Ennis Friary has a cloister, a Gothic window and carved stonework. Spend time at the friary before heading to the coast, then explore the town's old streets.

Arrange access to the friary interior or a guided visit through Heritage Ireland.

Half a day

  1. Aillwee cave and birds of prey Any weather

The cave and outdoor birds-of-prey attractions give the northern Burren a varied visit, with shelter underground and outdoor activities when the weather suits. Visit from Ballyvaughan and give the cave and birds of prey their own outing.

The cave is underground, but flying displays are outdoors and have separate arrangements.

  2. Poulnabrone and Caherconnell Dry day

Pair the portal tomb with Caherconnell's ringfort for an inland archaeology outing. The fort's sheepdog demonstrations give children something different to watch between archaeology stops.

Book a visit that includes the demonstration if you want to see the sheepdogs as well as the fort.

  3. Lahinch beach and promenade Dry day

Use Lahinch for a beach walk, time on the sand or a booked surf lesson. The promenade makes this a useful local outing from a Lahinch base without turning the day into a county-wide drive.

Read the beach noticeboard and follow local guidance. Surf conditions may be unsuitable for casual swimming.

  4. Cliffs of Moher Experience Dry day

The main viewing area, O'Brien's Tower and visitor-centre exhibition form the core visit. Walk the paths when visibility is good. Visit the exhibition to learn about the cliffs' geology and wildlife before leaving.

Use the official entrance and designated paths. Use the official coastal-walk safety notice to find which longer routes are available.

  5. Burren National Park Dry day

Begin in Corofin for maps and advice, then choose a marked trail suited to the group. The short routes and Mullaghmore hill walks give very different outings, so choose a short route if the group does not want a hill walk.

The park recommends the information point and seasonal shuttle; the trailhead has no visitor facilities.

  6. Fanore Beach Dry day

Fanore combines a sandy shore, the Caher River and the coastal Burren for a northern coast outing. Choose beach time when that appeals more than another visitor centre, keeping a longer inland walking loop for a different part of the day.

Follow the beach noticeboard and local conditions before entering the water. Use established paths through the dunes.

A full day

  1. Aran Islands from Doolin Dry day

Choose one island for the day: Inis Mór for Dún Aonghasa, Inis Oírr for a smaller island visit, or Inis Meáin for walking and stone forts. Book the ferry and island transport, then choose the sights that fit.

Book outward and return sailings for the same island, following the operator's service and weather advice.

  2. Loop Head coast Dry day

Give the western Clare coast its own day if the lighthouse and headland are priorities. Keep it separate from a northern Burren day. On a short trip, visit Loop Head instead of another coastal outing.

Use the official visitor information for lighthouse access and keep any headland walk within local instructions.

Clare outings near your base

From Doolin, start with the cliffs, cave or a confirmed island sailing. They use different meeting points and need different amounts of the day. From Lahinch, make beach time or a surf lesson the local activity and add one inland visit on another day. From Ennis, keep the friary and old streets for a town visit, then use Corofin for a national park outing.

The northern Burren makes another useful group: Ballyvaughan, Aillwee and the Fanore coast. Poulnabrone and Caherconnell are an inland archaeology group. Select one group for the main day instead of treating every Clare sight as a stop on one loop. If the holiday only has one full day, choose the cliffs and one nearby activity, leaving the island and Loop Head for a longer stay.

A rainy-day plan

Book a guided underground tour at Doolin Cave or Aillwee that suits your group's access needs. Choose the nearer cave, and check visitor access before you go. Aillwee's outdoor attractions depend on the weather as well as the cave booking. Lahinch Leisure Centre is a different indoor choice for a beach holiday, while the Courthouse Gallery in Ennistymon suits an art stop.

Kilfenora's Burren Centre and Lisdoonvarna's Spa Wells Heritage Centre provide indoor local history. The cliffs exhibition can explain the place, but fog can hide the view, and severe weather can make a cliff visit unsuitable. If the cliffs plan is unsuitable, move it to another day and use an indoor visit in the same part of Clare. Do not cross the county merely to collect every rainy-day option.

With children

For younger children, choose one main activity and a shorter outdoor stop. Lahinch can combine the swimming pools with sand time when conditions suit. Doolin Cave has an underground tour and an outdoor nature trail. Choose the parts that suit the group. Caherconnell's sheepdogs provide an alternative to another archaeological monument, but the visit still needs to match the operator's arrangements.

For older children interested in walking, ask for national park trail advice in Corofin. The park has trails of different grades and lengths, so choose one that suits the group. At the cliffs, use the designated visitor paths and keep children with the group. An island day adds a boat journey and return deadline, so choose it as the main activity. It should not be squeezed between a cave booking and an evening departure from Clare.

What to skip on a short visit

Choose one cave unless geology is a main interest. Pick a single island rather than trying to combine several crossings. Leave Loop Head out of a short Doolin or Burren visit unless the western coast is a priority. Leaving these out gives you more time at the places you visit. A visit to Clare does not need to include every kind of coast and every underground attraction.

For car-free travel, use Irish Rail to Ennis and use route 350 for the coast. Corofin's park shuttle is seasonal, and inland sites need their own transport. Choose return journeys that leave enough time at the attraction before buying tickets. If the connections force a rushed visit, choose a guided outing or a more local day. Leave some days for the village or town where you stay.

Questions people ask

What should you do in Clare on a first visit?

Choose the Cliffs of Moher, one Burren outing and local time in Doolin, Lahinch or Ennis. Add an island or the Loop Head coast only when a full day is available for it.

What can you do in Clare when it rains?

Compare Doolin Cave, Aillwee's cave, Lahinch Leisure Centre, the Courthouse Gallery, the Burren Centre and Lisdoonvarna's heritage centre. Choose places near your base, allowing for the access available on your dates.

What are good things to do in Clare with kids?

Lahinch's beach and pools, a suitable cave tour and Caherconnell's sheepdogs are the first choices to compare. Choose a national park route by ability, and give a ferry outing its own day.

Can you see Clare without driving?

Ennis has rail access and route 350 serves the coast. Corofin has a seasonal park shuttle. Scattered inland sights need an available bus connection or arranged tour, so choose a small group of sights for a day without a car.
