What to do

Any weather Best on a dry day

An hour or two

  1. Clifden's Sky Road Dry day

The Sky Road is a coastal loop with broad views over the bay and islands. Take the drive when visibility is good, stopping at viewpoints along the way.

Discover Ireland describes a loop of about 16km with a steep ascent. Use proper stopping places and avoid treating the road as a flat town walk.

  2. Killary Sheep Farm Dry day

The working farm and sheepdog demonstrations connect the Killary area with its farming life. It is a useful family choice when a demonstration would interest the group more than another scenic stop.

Book the farm activities you want. Some are seasonal and will not be part of every tour.

Half a day

  1. Kylemore Abbey and Victorian Walled Garden Any weather

Choose the abbey, neo-Gothic church and walled garden for history and gardens, or as a change of pace after a walking day. Indoor rooms can support a day with showers, but the outdoor estate is part of the attraction.

Allow for the outdoor gardens and estate paths as well as the indoor rooms.

  2. Glengowla Mines and Family Farm Experience Any weather

The show mine is near Oughterard in eastern Connemara. Visit on the approach from Galway or while staying near Oughterard. Choose an indoor stop closer to your base if you are already in western Connemara.

The mine tour and outdoor farm activities have different access needs and locations. Choose the parts that suit your group.

  3. Connemara National Park trails Dry day

Start at the visitor centre near Letterfrack and choose Ellis Wood, Sruffaunboy or the Diamond Hill routes for the group's level of effort. A shorter trail leaves room to learn about the park at the visitor centre without taking on the upper summit.

The park grades Upper Diamond Hill as strenuous. Read its route information and choose the walk for the group and conditions.

  4. Derrigimlagh Dry day

The bog connects the story of Marconi's wireless station with Alcock and Brown's transatlantic landing. Walk here for radio and aviation history in open country near Clifden.

Use the official discovery-point route and remain on established access; the surrounding bog can be wet, so keep to the route.

  5. Gorteen Bay and Dog's Bay Dry day

Gorteen Bay and Dog's Bay are neighbouring beaches outside Roundstone on the southern coast. Walk the beach, spend time on the sand or book a water activity when conditions suit. Return to Roundstone afterwards.

The bays are outside Roundstone. Arrange transport to the bays. Only enter the sea when conditions are suitable.

  6. Killary Fjord boat tour Dry day

A cruise gives a different view of Killary Harbour from a road stop. Choose the cruise for time on the fjord. Leave time on either side to reach the operator's meeting point without rushing between bookings.

Book through the operator, using its named departure point and following its weather advice. Go to the named boarding point, which is separate from Leenane village.

Choose a part of Connemara for the day

Use Letterfrack and Kylemore as one northern group, Clifden and Derrigimlagh as a western group, and Roundstone with its neighbouring bays as a southern group. Killary adds the fjord and farm visits around Leenane. Oughterard serves the eastern mine and castle stops. Choose one group to avoid spending the day driving between distant sights.

For a first short stay, choose the park and one coastal group. Add Kylemore if the estate interests the group, or give it the place of a long hike. The separate itinerary sets out a single route for a road trip. You do not need to see every group of sights. Stay near the part of Connemara you want to explore most.

The national park without an upper summit

The visitor centre and main entrance are near Letterfrack on the N59. Ellis Wood is the short woodland option, while Sruffaunboy follows the lower slopes and passes the pony paddock. Lower Diamond Hill offers a longer moderate trail. These trails give you a park walk without tackling the upper route. Read the park map rather than choosing a walk only from a photograph of the summit.

Upper Diamond Hill is the strenuous option. Leave it out when the weather, footwear or group makes it unsuitable. The same visit can use a lower route and the visitor centre instead. For children, choose the walk before setting expectations about the view. Enjoy the lower trails without needing to reach the summit.

Rain and family alternatives

Glengowla's mine, the Sheep and Wool Centre at Leenane, and Dan O'Hara's Homestead near Clifden provide different heritage subjects. Choose the option in the part of Connemara where the day is based. Check access and which elements are indoors before travelling. Kylemore includes indoor rooms, but the garden and estate paths remain an outdoor part of the experience.

For families, compare a shorter park walk with a farm demonstration, beach time or a suitable mine tour. You need to arrive for a booked demonstration. A beach visit is easier to shorten. On a wet day, avoid adding a distant indoor attraction solely to fill the afternoon. A local heritage stop and time in the base town can be a better use of the day than another cross-region journey.

Transport and what to skip

Transport for Ireland lists route 419 for Galway to Clifden, route 423 via Leenane and Citylink route 923 towards Clifden and Letterfrack. Choose a departure and stop that serve your main outing. These buses will not follow every stop on a driving loop. Kylemore can also be visited on an organised Galway excursion, with the stops agreed when booking.

Skip the attempt to combine a major hike, Kylemore, a Killary cruise and the southern beaches in one day. Choose one activity with a set booking and keep the rest nearby. Leave the Sky Road for clear conditions if the view is the reason to go, and omit a second beach when the group would prefer more time at the first. Use the Clifden guide for local town activities and leave those out of longer regional days.

Questions people ask

What are the best things to do in Connemara National Park?

Choose among Ellis Wood, Sruffaunboy, Lower Diamond Hill and the strenuous upper route, beginning at the visitor centre. The shorter trails offer a park walk without a summit climb.

What can you do in Connemara in the rain?

Compare the mine at Glengowla, the Sheep and Wool Centre near Leenane and the heritage centre near Clifden. Kylemore has indoor elements, but much of its estate visit is outdoors.

Can you see Connemara without a car?

Yes, with outings based on the routes to Clifden, Letterfrack or Leenane, or an organised excursion. Choose services that use the stops you need and allow time for the return. Scattered beaches and farm meeting points need extra arrangements.

What should you skip on a short Connemara visit?

Leave out extra coastal groups and duplicate viewpoints. Keep a national park walk and one coast or heritage outing, then add another group only when the trip has enough time for it.
