Day trips worth taking

Any weather Best on a dry day

Half a day

  1. Lahinch beach or swimming pools Any weather

Take the coastal bus or a car for a local beach-and-town outing. Choose the sand and promenade in suitable conditions, or make the leisure centre's pools the main activity when sea conditions are unsuitable.

Choose a bus stop and return that serve your outing. Book public swimming if you want the pools instead of the beach.

  2. Cliffs of Moher Experience Dry day

Take route 350 or travel by car or arranged transfer to the official visitor entrance. On arrival, choose the managed viewpoints and exhibition rather than planning the day around a continuous walk from Doolin.

Use the official coastal-walk notice for path access. An old walking description may not show current restrictions, so arrange road transport to the visitor centre.

A full day

  1. Ballyvaughan and Aillwee Any weather

Drive to the cave, then visit the village and pier separately. A bus to Ballyvaughan can form part of the outing only when the final transfer to Aillwee and the return to Doolin are confirmed.

Arrange cave access separately from the outdoor birds-of-prey programme. Only the cave provides shelter.

  2. Inis Oírr Dry day

Book a return sailing from Doolin Pier and choose a village-and-heritage visit or the walk towards the Plassy wreck. Choose Inis Oírr for a smaller island visit, returning to the pier for your booked ferry.

Book the outward and return sailings for your travel date. The full walking loop is a larger outing than a short village stroll.

  3. Inis Mór Dry day

Take a confirmed Doolin return sailing and arrange island transport for a route centred on Dún Aonghasa. Choose a minibus or cycling plan that fits the actual time ashore, with the fort approach treated as a separate walk.

The fort has rough rising ground and an unfenced cliff edge. Leave enough time for your ferry and land route before adding a second major island sight.

  4. Inis Meáin Dry day

Choose this island for Dún Chonchúir, the village roads and Teach Synge when accessible. Use the Doolin operator's current route information to find an outward and return sailing for your date.

Book both ferry legs specifically for Inis Meáin and arrange the connection from the pier to the village sights.

  5. Corofin and Burren National Park Dry day

Choose a car or arranged transport to Corofin, begin at the information point and use the seasonal shuttle when operating. Pick a marked trail from the park's advice instead of assuming the main hill walk suits every group.

The trailhead has no visitor facilities. Arrange the shuttle return or book another pickup before leaving Corofin.

  6. Ennis and the friary Dry day

Use a return route 350 journey for a town day, or drive to Ennis and explore on foot. Spend time at the friary, carved stonework and medieval streets, leaving further transfers out of the day.

Arrange friary access and a bus return that leaves enough time in Ennis. Do not add another coastal stop if it removes the time intended for Ennis.

Choose one island and reserve both legs

Doolin Ferry lists separate sailing options for Inis Oírr, Inis Mór and Inis Meáin. Book the intended island for your travel date, including the return. The service is seasonal, and one island's availability should not be assumed from another's. Check transport and attraction access before you go. Follow the arrival instructions for Doolin Pier, allowing for the journey from Fisher Street or Roadford.

Choose Inis Mór for the fort and an organised island route, Inis Oírr for the village and Plassy walk, or Inis Meáin for its stone fort and literary history. Use the island guide to choose what to do after arrival. A first day trip should use one island with enough time on land. Book inter-island transport separately if you want to island-hop. Mainland boats do not automatically provide those connections.

Island sights between the ferries

On Inis Mór, Cill Rónáin is the arrival point for the listed local tours and bike hire. Dún Aonghasa requires a further pedestrian approach over rough ground. Allow for that walk before adding the seal colony, Seven Churches or beach. A tour can organise the route, but book the sights you want and a return that fits your ferry.

On Inis Oírr, the official waymarked loop starts at the pier and reaches the Plassy wreck after passing historic sites. Choose a shorter village route if the return does not leave enough time for the full walk. On Inis Meáin, arrange the journey from the pier to Dún Chonchúir and Teach Synge. The pier, village sights and museum need separate walking and access arrangements.

Land trips from the Doolin base

Use the official visitor entrance for the cliffs. The live coastal-walk notice should decide any walking plan from Doolin, with closures respected. Arrive and return by car or a bus that serves the visitor entrance. Lahinch offers beach time or a pool visit, depending on conditions. Keep the two destinations separate if a short day is the aim.

For the Burren, choose Aillwee with Ballyvaughan or a Corofin-based park day. They serve different parts of the region. You need onward transport from the Ballyvaughan bus to the cave entrance. The park trailhead is also outside Corofin. Use a car, a suitable organised outing or confirmed transfers with a taxi booked in advance if you need one. Ennis is the town alternative when the friary and streets interest the group.

A cancelled sailing and what to leave out

If sea or weather conditions lead the operator to cancel, keep the day on the mainland unless another journey is actually confirmed. Doolin Cave is the local underground option, with village craft stops and a music evening providing a different pace. Lahinch's pools are another possibility with transport and pool access arranged separately. Exposed cliffs are not an automatic substitute for an unsuitable sea day.

Do not try to recover a cancelled Doolin sailing by rushing to Rossaveel without confirmed transport and a new booking. An overnight on the island is an alternative for a longer plan, but you will need a room and a return ferry for a later day. For a short Doolin stay, leave one of the island, cliffs and Burren days out if there is too much to fit in. Leave time to enjoy the village evening.

Questions people ask

Which Aran Island should you visit from Doolin?

Compare Inis Oírr for the village and Plassy walk, Inis Mór for Dún Aonghasa, or Inis Meáin for its fort and Synge museum. Choose an island with outward and return sailings available for your date.

Can you take a day trip from Doolin to Inis Mór?

Use a confirmed Doolin return sailing for the travel date and choose the land route around the time ashore. The fort approach still needs a walk even if island transport is arranged.

What can you do if the Doolin ferry is cancelled?

Choose an available mainland activity such as Doolin Cave, a village day or Lahinch's pools. Another port is an alternative only after the overland transfer and replacement sailing are confirmed.

Can you take day trips from Doolin without a car?

You can use the island ferry or route 350 when the returns and final transfers fit your visit. Inland Burren sites need additional arrangements. Arrange the separate journeys between the bus stop, attraction entrance and pier.
