Day trips worth taking
Any weather Best on a dry day
Half a day
Howth Dry day
Howth has a working harbour, East Pier and the moderate Cliff Path Loop. Take the DART from Dublin, choosing the pier for a shorter walk or the rougher loop with suitable footwear.
Return to Dublin by DART. Use Irish Rail's journey information for your return. Make the harbour or full loop the main activity, with a museum or boat only if time allows.
Malahide Castle and village Dry day
Malahide has a castle and gardens, with the village as another stop. Take the DART for a garden and heritage day if that appeals more than Howth's headland walk.
The castle operator lists the DART as an arrival option. Book the castle or garden experience separately from your rail journey. Choose the return train to fit the time you want at the attraction and in the village.
Dún Laoghaire Dry day
Dún Laoghaire has a harbour walk along East Pier and the National Maritime Museum for an indoor stop. Take the DART south from Dublin, with the museum included if its visitor arrangements fit.
Use the coastal rail route for the return to Dublin. Choose the pier as the main dry-weather visit, and use the museum's visitor information to find a suitable session if you want an indoor stop.
Bray Dry day
Bray has a town and seafront to explore in County Wicklow. Take the DART for an outdoor day beside the sea, with inland mountain excursions saved for another outing.
Return from Bray by rail. Use the railway to travel between Bray and Greystones. For a cliff walk between them, use current trail information to find out whether the route is available.
A full day
Glendalough Dry day
Glendalough has a round tower, stone churches and lakes, with valley walks around the monastic site. Take St. Kevin's Bus Service, drive or book a tour for a Wicklow day focused on the valley.
Choose the bus return before choosing a trail. A lower-valley heritage visit and a longer mountain walk need different time allowances. Use the official site information for access, particularly around the graveyard.
Brú na Bóinne Dry day
Brú na Bóinne has the prehistoric monuments of Newgrange and Knowth, reached through its visitor centre. Drive or book a Dublin return tour for a day here, with coastal excursions left for another outing.
The official site requires monument visits to begin at the visitor centre, with shuttle transport and pre-booked guided access. Choose a tour whose booking includes the monument experience you want, as well as travel from Dublin.
Kilkenny Any weather
Kilkenny has a castle, parkland and city streets for a full heritage day. Take Irish Rail from Dublin Heuston if that appeals more than a coastal walk, returning to Dublin after the visit.
Kilkenny is on Irish Rail's Waterford route. Choose the return train alongside your castle visit. Use the castle's visitor notices for the building and parkland, as they can have different access arrangements.
Belfast Any weather
Belfast has Titanic Belfast, Ulster Museum and central streets to explore. Take the Enterprise from Dublin Connolly to Belfast Grand Central, choosing one main museum and adding the centre if the return allows.
Reserve the rail journey through the official operator, using the ticket's return terms to choose the journey back. Add local transport for Titanic Quarter or the university district. Allow for the journey from Grand Central to your chosen museum as well as the time inside.
The easiest returns stay on the coastal railway
Howth, Malahide, Dún Laoghaire and Bray are the straightforward rail-based comparisons on this list. Choose one destination and spend the day there, with time to walk around. Travelling to both sides of the bay can use time you would otherwise have at the shore. Howth gives harbour and headland choices. Malahide gives a castle-and-garden focus. Dún Laoghaire and Bray suit a seaside walk with a clear railway return.
For a short day, use Howth's harbour and East Pier instead of the complete cliff loop. The official loop is moderate and includes rough ground, so choose it for a day focused on walking. In Malahide, book the castle or garden experience you want before arriving. In Bray, keep the seafront plan independent of a through trail to Greystones. Choose Howth's harbour for a short walk, the full loop for a longer one, or Malahide for castle and garden time.
Countryside trips need the attraction and the return
Glendalough has a published Dublin bus connection through St. Kevin's Bus Service. Choose the return before choosing a walk. The monastic site and the lakes provide a worthwhile visit without committing to a longer mountain route. A car or organised tour is another way to make the outing, with time in the valley set by the tour programme. Compare the time at Glendalough as well as the other Wicklow stops before choosing a tour.
At Brú na Bóinne, the visitor centre is the required starting point for monument visits. Newgrange and Knowth access uses the site's shuttle and guided arrangements. Choose a Dublin tour that includes the monuments you want to enter. If driving, navigate to the visitor centre for the shuttle and guided visit. Arrange the monument booking before travelling to the Boyne Valley.
Rain, children and longer railway days
For rain, compare a Kilkenny day with a confirmed castle visit against Belfast with one substantial museum. Both days involve station transfers and some outdoor walking, with the castle or museum providing the main time under cover. In Belfast, choose Titanic or Ulster Museum first and plan the local connection around it. Trying to fit both between intercity trains can take time away from the attraction that most interests the group.
With younger children, a coastal day can be easier to shorten than a long intercity outing. Choose a pier, beach or garden according to the family, and keep any additional visit optional. For interested older children, Newgrange's guided experience or Belfast's maritime story may justify the longer day. Use the attraction's access and visitor information to decide what suits your children's ages and interests. Choose the longer day only when the main visit appeals to them.
What to skip from a Dublin base
Leave the Cliffs of Moher, Kerry and the full Causeway Coast for a route with overnight time in those regions unless a specifically chosen long tour is the holiday's priority. Keep the day focused on a place where you can spend time at the sight, with the return to Dublin fitting around it. The national stay guide helps move those regional visits into a longer route.
Choose an intercity return before reserving a timed attraction. Check Irish Rail or Translink before you go for the travel date's departures, return options and engineering changes. The same applies to the Glendalough bus. If the return window is unsuitable, choose a coastal day with an available return that fits the outing. The room remains in Dublin throughout each trip listed here.
