Best for most people

Buncrana

Best for: First visit, town facilities, Lough Swilly

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

Buncrana is a seaside town beside Lough Swilly, with a shore path for local walks. Choose it for a stay that includes local walks and a separate outing to Fort Dunree.

Watch out: Malin Head and the Greencastle side need their own journeys, so stay here for western Inishowen with separate trips north or east.

Ballyliffin

Best for: Northern Inishowen, golf, Doagh visits

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Ballyliffin has golf courses and suits days spent on the peninsula's northern side. You can take separate outings to Doagh Famine Village and Glenevin Waterfall.

Watch out: The museum at Doagh and waterfall at Clonmany are separate destinations, not attractions within a walkable village centre.

Moville

Best for: Lough Foyle, town and shore time

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

Moville is a town beside Lough Foyle, with Moville Green and the shore walk for local outings. Choose it when the eastern side of Inishowen matters more than repeatedly returning to Lough Swilly.

Watch out: Fort Dunree is on the western side of the peninsula and needs a dedicated outing from here.

Greencastle

Best for: Maritime museum, harbour, eastern coast

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Greencastle has the Inishowen Maritime Museum and Planetarium in the old coastguard station near the ferry landing. Stay here for the harbour and museum, with days spent on the eastern coast.

Watch out: A ferry arrival depends on the operator's sailings and sea conditions.

Choose between Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle

Buncrana is the straightforward western choice. The shore path follows Lough Swilly, while Fort Dunree adds military history and walking trails farther along the coast. A short stay can give one day to the town and shoreline and another to Dunree and the Clonmany side. For a short stay, give these places time before adding a drive around the rest of the peninsula.

Moville and Greencastle shift the holiday to Lough Foyle. Moville adds town time and its Green, while Greencastle has the maritime museum and planetarium. Choose this side when the museum and eastern coastline are essential. Stay beside Lough Foyle for days in Moville and Greencastle. You can cross the peninsula for Fort Dunree, but if most days will be on Lough Swilly, Buncrana saves that repeated journey.

Ballyliffin for the northern coast

Ballyliffin is the northern choice, with golf courses nearby and outings to Doagh and Clonmany. Its golf courses are a clear reason to stay locally, and nearby outing choices include Doagh Famine Village and Glenevin Waterfall at Clonmany. The folk museum is an outdoor site with buildings, while the waterfall is reached on a marked valley path. Spend a day at the folk museum or walking to the waterfall, with Malin Head as a separate coastal outing.

Give Malin Head a separate outing from Ballyliffin, with time at Banba's Crown and the coast around it. Choose clear weather and keep the rest of that day short. Ballyliffin suits a holiday that includes time on the northern coast. Malin Head is still exposed, so keep it for good weather and use the museum or a shorter outing when conditions are poor.

If Culdaff Beach is the main family outing, compare the northeastern coast with a Buncrana stay before booking. Its visitor facilities include a children's play area, while Greencastle adds the maritime museum on the eastern side. Those local choices can be enough for a short stay without making every day a peninsula circuit.

What works on foot and what needs transport

Buncrana and Moville give the strongest local walking reasons to stay in a town. Donegal's walking guide describes the Buncrana shore path as a one-way route beside Lough Swilly, so allow for the walk back rather than treating the far end as the finish of a loop. Moville Green and the shore route provide the eastern town's own local outing.

The larger attraction list is spread across Inishowen: Fort Dunree on Lough Swilly, the maritime museum at Greencastle, Doagh Famine Village near Ballyliffin and Malin Head in the north. You can walk around Buncrana or Moville, but need separate transport for these rural sights. Book outward and return transfers for the places you want to see. Choose your overnight town from those journeys, so you can get from your room to each outing and back.

Staying for children or a rainy forecast

The maritime museum and planetarium in Greencastle offer indoor maritime exhibits and planetarium shows for families. Check operators' sites before you go for museum shows, bus journeys and any ferry crossing. Stay near Greencastle if the maritime museum and planetarium are the main family outing. Fort Dunree also has indoor museum exhibits, though the trails, headland and views are outdoor parts of the visit.

For a dry family outing, Glenevin has a marked route, footbridges and picnic areas, with fairy doors mentioned in the official visitor listing. Culdaff Beach adds a sandy shore and a children's play area on the northeastern side. Neither requires a mountain itinerary. Choose Ballyliffin for outings towards Glenevin, or the northeastern side for Culdaff. In rain, spend more of the day inside the maritime museum or Fort Dunree's exhibits and save the shore and headlands for a dry spell.

How much of Inishowen to fit into one stay

For a short Buncrana break, concentrate on the shore, Fort Dunree and one northern outing. For an eastern stay, use Moville, Greencastle and either Culdaff or a suitable coastal walk. Malin Head can be the main additional day from either side if the transport and weather work. Grianán of Aileach, near Burt, is another exposed stop that suits a clear arrival or departure day more than a compulsory detour.

If Slieve League and Donegal Town are also on the holiday list, split the county stay. Donegal Town and Slieve League are in another part of the county. Give them their own nights instead of driving back to Inishowen after each visit. For the peninsula, choose Buncrana for Lough Swilly, Ballyliffin for the northern coast, or Moville and Greencastle for Lough Foyle.

Questions people ask

Where is the best base in Inishowen?

Buncrana is the first recommendation for a town stay beside Lough Swilly. Ballyliffin suits the northern side and golf. Moville or Greencastle suit Lough Foyle and the maritime museum. Choose according to the part of the peninsula where the days will be spent.

Is Buncrana or Moville better?

Choose Buncrana for the western shore and Fort Dunree outings. Choose Moville for Lough Foyle and visits towards Greencastle. Both provide local shore time, but neither puts the other side's sights within a town-centre walk.

Can you explore Inishowen without a car?

A stay with local walking is possible, but rural sightseeing needs suitable bus journeys or booked transfers. Arrange a return from each headland or museum as well as the outward trip. A bus to Buncrana or Moville gets you to the town, with another journey needed for the rural sights.

Where should families stay in Inishowen?

Compare Buncrana for town and shore time with Moville or Greencastle for the maritime museum. Ballyliffin fits northern outings to Doagh and Glenevin. Choose a practical cluster of activities rather than attempting the whole peninsula in one day.
