Kerry itinerary
Drive from Killarney along the southern Ring to Portmagee, then continue towards Dingle over three selective days. Add time for a Skellig landing, the Gap of Dunloe or a full Slea Head outing, or cut a region for a shorter stay.
Day by day
Day 1
Choose one national park area
Start in Killarney and spend the day at Muckross, choosing the house, gardens or traditional farms for the group and weather. Add a named park walk if there is time, using the official notes for its start and effort. Return to town and leave the Ring drive for the next day. If travel takes up much of the day, visit Killarney House instead and save the larger estate outing for another time.
Overnight: Killarney
Day 2
Follow the southern Ring to Portmagee
Travel towards Kenmare, then follow the southern coast through Sneem and the Caherdaniel area towards Waterville. Choose one main visit, such as Derrynane House, before continuing to Portmagee for the night. Leave a harbour stop optional, or choose the Skellig Experience on Valentia for an indoor visit when its visitor arrangements fit. Keep a Skellig landing for a separate day, with its own boat booking and suitability decision.
Overnight: Portmagee
Day 3
Continue around Iveragh, then finish in Dingle
Continue along the northern side of the Ring towards Cahersiveen and Killorglin, then head to Dingle. Stay local on arrival, with Díseart or Oceanworld as indoor options when a visit is available and suits the group. Leave a full Slea Head outing for another day. Finish in Dingle only if it fits your onward journey; otherwise, leave this part out before booking the rooms.
Overnight: Dingle

Killarney, Portmagee and Dingle overnights
This driving route uses a different overnight after each day. It gives you time in the national park, along the Ring and in Dingle, with a small selection of visits in each area. The coast leads onwards towards Dingle without returning to Killarney to complete a loop. Make sure the final Dingle night fits the next part of your Ireland trip before booking the sequence.
Central Killarney suits time in town after the park. In Portmagee, choose a room for the harbour or land attractions you want; the default route does not assume a boat trip. Dingle town suits the arrival evening and peninsula outings if you add a day. Ask each property about parking, its guest entrance and luggage arrangements, particularly when you want to visit somewhere before check-in.
The day labels allocate holiday time rather than quoted driving durations. Look up your actual route and conditions before departure. If arrival or departure takes up much of a day, cut a visit or region instead of squeezing in the same list. A longer walk, fixed class or island visit should take the place of something else. Leave enough time for the activity as well as the drive.
What to cut if the trip is shorter
For less time, choose fewer areas. Keep Killarney and a coastal section if the park and Ring matter most, with Dingle for another stay. If Dingle is the main reason for coming, leave out the western Ring and allow time for the town and peninsula. Keeping every overnight while shortening every visit can leave you with more time moving than exploring.
In the park, choose one estate or the Ross Castle area. On the Ring, make Derrynane or another chosen sight the main stop and leave extra detours optional. On arrival in Dingle, stay in town rather than adding Slea Head after the transfer. These cuts leave time for actual visits. A brief stop on a journey is different from spending a day on the peninsula.
With one useful day, stay near the main outing and set the county route aside. The park guide, Dingle activity guide and Ring stop guide offer local choices. Choose the one that matches what you most want to do. Include the return to your wider Ireland route before choosing an overnight, so the next morning does not need another transfer you had not allowed for.
Wet-weather swaps along the same route
Muckross House or Killarney House can replace a longer park walk in rain. The gardens and traditional farms still involve outdoor time. Ross Castle offers another indoor heritage visit if its steep access and guided format suit the group. Choose one of these in place of the outdoor activity. Adding a second indoor stop and another journey may make the day busier than you want.
Derrynane House gives the Ring section an indoor history visit when access is available. The Skellig Experience offers an indoor land visit on Valentia. Choose by the subject and the part of the route you are using. Shorten the list of coastal viewpoints if visibility makes them unappealing. An indoor destination does not require every exposed stop on the drive there.
In Dingle, Oceanworld, Díseart and arranged indoor activities offer alternatives to time outside. The rain guide compares them. If you add a western peninsula day, the Blasket Centre gives you a mainland cultural visit. Before setting out, check the venues and any fixed activity, including access, availability and current transport or boat arrangements. A cancelled outing may mean dropping sightseeing stops while still keeping the accommodation move.
Extra nights for the Gap, Skelligs or Slea Head
Add a Killarney night if you want both a fuller park visit and the Gap of Dunloe. Choose a Gap excursion by its walking demands and included transport. Keep it separate from the arrival day, especially if travel leaves only a short afternoon. The Killarney day-trip guide compares other return outings if you would prefer to stay longer in town.
Add time on the Skellig Coast for a permitted landing. Choose the boat, read the visitor-suitability guidance and find the meeting point before booking a room around it. An extra day leaves more flexibility in the holiday, but it cannot guarantee a replacement sailing. Keep the Skellig Experience or a suitable land visit as an activity you would want even without the boat.
Add a Dingle night for a selected Slea Head day, with stops such as the Blasket Centre or Gallarus chosen for the group's interests. If all your days are for the Ring, stay in that area and omit the Dingle transfer. If they are for Killarney, keep a local base for the park and excursions. There is no need to follow the county moves when you want more time in one place.
Without a car and with children
Irish Rail serves Killarney and Tralee, while Bus Éireann and Local Link list routes to other towns. Use the car-free guide to rebuild the transfers before booking these overnights. Public transport will not reproduce the driving day and its chosen coastal stops. For a short visit without a car, compare one town base and an excursion with included transport before choosing several accommodation changes.
House visits, guided tours, classes and boats can all affect the route. A Skellig landing needs the permitted operator's information and terms, with the climb assessed for your group. For the Gap, find out which transfers are included and where the trip ends. Save the booking details so you can plan the journeys around them. Leave other stops optional rather than fitting fixed activities too closely together.
With children, make the farms, a suitable walk or the aquarium the main activity, with another stop only if everyone wants more. Changing rooms every day may leave less time for breaks. If that would tire the family, cut a region and keep one base longer. Choose the route that lets you enjoy the visits and return simply at the end of the day.
Questions people ask
Is three days enough for Kerry?
Three days suit a selective route: a park day, a coastal journey to Portmagee and a move towards Dingle. Add time for Slea Head, the Gap of Dunloe or a Skellig landing. Leave out a region if travel takes up part of those days.
Can you use three days just for the Ring of Kerry?
Yes. Leave out the Dingle transfer and use the time for Ring stops and overnights. Choose one main activity each day rather than keeping the whole county route.
How should you add Dingle to a Kerry itinerary?
Finish in Dingle when it fits the onward journey, with town as the arrival plan. Add a day for the western peninsula. A short town stop after a transfer does not give you a full peninsula visit.
Should you stay in Killarney for the whole trip?
Stay in Killarney for the park and return excursions. Split the stay when Portmagee or Dingle deserves more time. If moving would take too much of the holiday, choose fewer regions and a longer stay in one base.
