Best for most people

Main Street and Market Street

Best for: First visits, galleries and evenings in town

  • Walkable
  • Car not needed

Colourful streets, small shops and galleries give the centre its character. The harbour is part of the same town visit, and route 226 provides the connection with Cork and the airport.

Watch out: The Old Head and the surfing beaches need an outing beyond the town centre.

Scilly and Lower Road

Best for: Harbour walks with a town connection

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

Lower Road is where the Scilly Walk starts towards Summercove. Stay here for walks beside the water, with the town at one end and the fort at the other.

Watch out: Walking to Charles Fort and back is a longer outing than a short harbour stroll.

Summercove and Charles Fort side

Best for: The fort and a harbour-focused stay

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Summercove sits at the far end of the Scilly Walk, below Charles Fort. Stay here for the outer harbour and the fort, with the central shopping streets farther away.

Watch out: A town evening ends with a walk or arranged lift, and the fort is uphill from Summercove.

Garretstown and Garrylucas coast

Best for: Beaches and surf outings

  • Partly walkable
  • Car needed

Garretstown and Garrylucas are beach destinations outside Kinsale. Stay on this coast for sand and a booked surf lesson, with the Old Head as another nearby outing.

Watch out: This is not a town-centre stay, so plan transport for Kinsale visits and evenings.

Main Street and Market Street

Main Street and Market Street have the shops and galleries that make Kinsale a good town break. The harbour is part of the same visit, so you can walk between it and the streets without getting into a car. A central room also suits an arrival on Bus Eireann route 226.

Charles Fort works as a day outing from the centre. Walk towards Summercove in suitable weather, then return to the town streets and waterfront. Staying nearer the fort puts you on the other side of that outing. It suits more time around the outer harbour, with a separate walk or lift back after an evening in town.

Main Street has contemporary art galleries. Market Street is part of the town's shopping and food area. Both suit a visit spent browsing and walking between stops. A central address tells you where the room is, though not how quiet it will be. Ask about the bedroom's position if you would prefer to face away from the street.

For a couple's break, the centre makes it easy to follow a harbour walk with dinner in town. Scilly suits a stay where walking beside the water is the main attraction. A beach address is a better choice for days on the coast, with transport back to town for evenings on Main Street.

Scilly, Summercove and the forts

The Scilly Walk starts on Lower Road beside the harbour and follows the water towards Summercove. Charles Fort is farther uphill. Scilly suits a stay where that path is part of the day's walking. You keep a connection with town while staying on the way towards the outer harbour.

Summercove lies below Charles Fort and suits a visit focused on the fort and harbour. The fort is a substantial outdoor site with uneven ground, so wear good footwear. Staying nearby still leaves the climb to the entrance. In wet weather, allow for being outside through much of the visit.

TFI Local Link Cork lists the 253C Charlesfort and Kinsale town shuttle. It can help with a stay outside the centre, depending on the stop and the return you need. Check current bus stops, return connections and tour access before you go. For a late evening in town, arrange the return to a room beyond the centre.

James Fort stands across the harbour from Charles Fort. Visit it as a separate outing, since the forts are on opposite sides of the water. On a short stay, make Charles Fort the main history visit and leave James Fort for extra dry time. The view across the harbour does not show the full walking route.

Garretstown, Garrylucas and the Old Head

Garretstown Beach has surf lessons, while Garrylucas is another beach stop outside Kinsale. Stay on this coast for days on the sand and a return to the same coastal area. Listings may use Kinsale as the location, but a beach address puts you outside the town and its central streets.

A surf operator can advise on sea conditions and who a lesson suits. Staying beside a beach leaves the lesson dependent on the conditions that day. Keep a visit on land in reserve, such as the Lusitania Museum and Old Head Signal Tower. That gives a coastal stay another outing when surfing is unsuitable.

The Old Head museum tells the story of the Lusitania and includes the signal tower and a memorial garden. Add it to a coastal day as a visit in its own right. Public access to this attraction does not mean that the rest of the lighthouse and golf-course headland is open for walking.

A car is the recommendation for a stay on the beach coast. It lets you get into Kinsale and change the day's outing when the weather turns. Agreed taxi transfers can cover individual trips. The bus into Kinsale town leaves a separate transfer to arrange for accommodation on this rural coast.

Buses from Cork and things to do in rain

Route 226 connects Kinsale with Cork Airport and Kent Station. Kent is the interchange for an arrival by train; the airport link suits a flight into Cork. Either can let you reach a central Kinsale room without collecting a car. Use the operator's route information to find your boarding point.

TFI Local Link route 253 links Kinsale and Clonakilty, so it is useful for a longer trip with nights in both towns. The 253C is the shuttle listed for Kinsale and Charlesfort. Keep the two services separate when looking at routes: the similar numbers cover different trips.

The Gallery Kinsale on Main Street is an option in rain. Kinsale Mead Co. on Barracks Lane offers tours for an adult-led food-and-drink outing. The meadery is less suited to a full family wet day. These visits give you something indoors while keeping the harbour and Scilly Walk for a dry spell.

Cork city has the English Market, museums and the Glucksman. Stay there if you want several days of indoor sightseeing and trips by train. Kinsale suits a smaller harbour-town break with the Scilly Walk nearby. Route 226 also lets you visit Kinsale for a day while sleeping in Cork.
