Pick your base

Best for most people

Doolin

Best for: Music and an island trip alongside the cliffs

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Doolin is spread across Fisher Street, Roadford and the ferry pier. Stay here for the trad music and island ferries, and reach the official cliffs entrance by road.

Watch out: Do not rely on walking all the way from Doolin to the cliffs.

Lahinch

Best for: Beach, surfing and families

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

The promenade faces a sandy surf beach, and the leisure centre provides indoor swimming. Stay in the centre for beach time and activities for different ages, with the cliffs as a separate outing.

Watch out: The beach faces the Atlantic. Good surf conditions can mean an uncomfortable day on the cliffs.

Liscannor

Best for: A small village on Liscannor Bay

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

This village sits on the northern side of Liscannor Bay, with the Clahane coast nearby. Stay here with a car for the cliffs and bay. Choose Doolin for the ferry pier or Ennis for a larger town.

Watch out: A Liscannor address does not give you a continuous walking route to the visitor centre. Use the official entrance by road.

Lisdoonvarna

Best for: An inland base with spa heritage

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

The Spa Wells Heritage Centre is an indoor stop in town. Head into the wider Burren for day trips. Choose it when the cliffs are part of a driving trip through north Clare.

Watch out: You will travel for both a beach day and a Doolin sailing. Choose a coastal village if either is a daily priority.

Ennis

Best for: Rail arrivals and a bus excursion

  • Walkable
  • Car not needed

Ennis has a rail station, medieval streets and a friary. Route 350 connects the town with the coast. Stay here without a car and visit the cliffs by bus.

Watch out: The town is inland. You will need to fit the cliff visit between buses, even if the weather clears later.

Doolin, Lahinch and the smaller villages

Doolin has trad music for the evening and a ferry pier for island trips. Both are good reasons to stay overnight near the cliffs. Plan the cliff visit through the official entrance, then return for the village. If you are sailing to an island the next day, stay where you can reach the pier easily. Fisher Street and the pier are different places. Give the right location when arranging a pickup.

Lahinch suits families who want swimming or surfing as well as the cliffs. Visit the cliffs, then spend the rest of the stay on the promenade and beach. Liscannor suits someone who wants a smaller coastal village and has a car. Lisdoonvarna gives an inland alternative with spa heritage. Compare rooms for the same dates before choosing between towns.

When a day trip is enough

An overnight near the cliffs is optional. Ennis works if rail travel and a town stay already suit the wider trip. Route 350 connects Ennis with the coast, so you can visit from your existing base. You can also visit from Galway by bus or on an organised trip. Visit the cliffs and one nearby stop on a day trip. Keep your existing base if you would only move rooms for the cliff visit.

Stay near the coast if you also want time in Doolin, Lahinch or the Burren. Sleeping nearby lets you change the order of outings to suit the weather. Fog can still hide the view. Fog and high winds are reasons to reconsider the visit, and the visitor centre's indoor exhibition should not be the sole reason to move accommodation. Choose Ennis or Galway instead if town sightseeing is the stronger priority.

Getting to the cliffs entrance

The visitor centre, main viewing area, O'Brien's Tower and designated paths form the core visit. Reach that site using its published road directions or a bus serving the attraction. The official coastal-walk page is the source for access from Doolin and Liscannor. An old walking guide may describe a route that is now closed. Check the notice before setting out, and follow barriers and staff instructions at the site.

Choose each village for what is there. Doolin has music for the evening and island departures from the pier. You still need a transfer to the cliffs. Liscannor has the bay and nearby coast to explore. Walking to the cliffs depends on the available path access. For a walking holiday, choose an available route before choosing a room nearby. If the path you intended to use is unavailable, use road transport or choose another walk.

Bus access and car-free overnights

Ennis works well if you arrive by train. Irish Rail lists Ennis on the Galway to Limerick route, with Dublin connections on the wider network. Route 350 serves the Cliffs of Moher and Doolin. Choose an outward and return bus that leave enough time to see the cliffs.

In Doolin, match the bus stop to the part of the village where you are staying. A ferry booking may also need a pier transfer. Keep the last bus out of the cliffs site in the plan from the beginning, and leave time to get back from the viewing paths. If the return gives too little time, choose an organised excursion or sleep locally with a confirmed transfer. Book a taxi in advance if you need one for the return.

A practical choice for families and wet weather

Choose central Lahinch when a family needs both an outdoor day and an indoor alternative. The leisure centre has a main swimming pool and learner pool, while surf schools use the beach. The Courthouse Gallery in nearby Ennistymon adds an indoor art stop for a driving trip. Use these indoor stops when the weather is too poor for exposed cliff paths.

For a Doolin stay, Doolin Cave and village craft shops offer a different pace from the coast. The cave tour goes underground, which may not suit everyone. Lisdoonvarna's Spa Wells Heritage Centre provides a local history option. In Ennis, spend the town day at the friary and around the old streets. Avoid booking every day around exposed viewpoints: the best base is the one that still serves the rest of your Clare visit.

Questions people ask

What city is closest to the Cliffs of Moher?

The nearby places in this comparison are villages and towns, not cities. Galway is a city option with onward transport; Ennis is the rail-served town to compare. Choose by the actual journey and what else you want to do.

Is Doolin the best place to stay for the cliffs?

Choose Doolin when traditional music or an Aran Islands departure is also part of the trip. Reach the official cliffs entrance by road.

Can you walk to the cliffs from Liscannor?

Only use the coastal route when the official access notice says it is available. Use road transport to the visitor entrance when the through-route is unavailable. Follow all closures and barriers.

Should families stay in Lahinch or Doolin?

Lahinch is the recommendation for beach time, surfing and indoor swimming. Doolin suits a village evening and a booked boat trip. The cliffs are exposed whichever base you choose.
