Best for most people

Town centre and The Square

Best for: First visit and walking between town stops

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

Kenmare's centre has the stone circle, local heritage visits and town walks. Stay near The Square if you want to walk back from dinner. Arrange separate outings for the wider Ring of Kerry and Beara.

Watch out: Countryside attractions and bay activities beyond town still need transport.

Henry Street and the Bell Heights approach

Best for: Combining town with pier-side walks

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Kenmare tourism describes a walk from The Square along Henry Street and through Bell Heights towards the pier and Reenagross. An address along it can suit time by the bay as well as in town. Ask about the walk from the guest entrance.

Watch out: The described route includes a hill, so assess it for luggage, mobility needs and the return walk.

Reenagross and the pier approach

Best for: Woodland walks and a bay-focused visit

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Reenagross has woodland and waterside paths, with a walking route from the town centre. Stay nearby for that setting and local walks. Properties around the bay have different routes into town, so choose the address carefully.

Watch out: A booked boat trip may leave from somewhere other than the nearest waterside access.

Bonane and countryside outside Kenmare

Best for: Heritage park and a stay with independent transport

  • Not walkable
  • Car needed

Bonane Heritage Park is outside Kenmare, with a walk through archaeological sites. A countryside stay suits outings by car and time away from town. Include journeys for meals as well as sightseeing when choosing the property.

Watch out: A Kenmare address may be well outside town.

Choose the centre if walking back from dinner matters

The Square and the streets on Kenmare's town walks are the first places to compare for a central stay. The stone circle is in town, with the lace centre another local visit. Stay centrally if you want these stops on the doorstep and expect to use the car mainly for excursions. Find the guest entrance on a map alongside the places you will visit each day. The route between them matters more than the address label.

A property described as near town may still involve a walk that does not suit your group. Ask about slopes, steps and where the route joins the street. If you want evenings in the centre, choose somewhere you can return to comfortably. A countryside room adds little to the holiday if you would prefer to leave the car parked yet need to drive into town repeatedly. Compare that daily journey before choosing by the room's features.

The pier, Reenagross and the countryside

The pier approach and Reenagross suit a stay with woodland or waterside walks. The town tourism route follows Henry Street from the centre towards Bell Heights, including a hill. Find out where the accommodation sits along it and whether the walk suits your group with luggage. A bay view does not establish a route to the pier. Ask about the guest entrance as well as the setting before choosing a room here.

Bonane Heritage Park, Gleninchaquin Park and Star Outdoors are separate destinations outside the town centre. A countryside stay suits those outings when you have independent transport and want time at the property too. Compare the drive to the activity you most want to do, then ask about parking and the final approach. If you will need a taxi or property transfer, arrange it before booking a stay that depends on that journey.

Getting to Kenmare and travelling without a car

Bus Éireann route 270 runs through Kenmare and Killarney. For a rail arrival, Irish Rail serves Killarney on the Dublin Heuston to Tralee route. Plan the train and bus together, including the walk to the bus stop with luggage. Then allow for the final journey to your accommodation. A room outside town may add another transfer after the bus, so include that part of the arrival before choosing where to stay.

Local Link route 281 links Waterville and Kenmare. Route 282 links Kenmare and Castletownbere through communities on the Beara side. Before booking, check the current stops and return journeys, plus the availability and conditions of any attraction or boat trip you need. Central Kenmare is the first place to compare without a car. A bus through an area may still leave a journey to an attraction's entrance; arrange that separately if needed.

Use Kenmare for the outings that suit it

Kenmare suits separate outings to the southern Ring of Kerry and Beara. Bonane or Gleninchaquin can each be the main visit of a day, particularly if you want time to walk. Leave enough room to enjoy the stop and return to town. Adding another route just to cover more ground can use the time you wanted for Kenmare itself. Choose one main outing and spend the rest of the day around it.

For a short visit, stay local with the stone circle, a town walk and an indoor visit you have arranged. Contact the lace centre before relying on it for a rainy afternoon. For an activity on the water, find out where the group meets and allow enough time to get there from your room. Leave space around an organised outing so a delayed arrival does not put pressure on the rest of the day.

Staying with children and planning for rain

With young children, a central room can make it easier to return for a break between short outings. A countryside property may suit a family spending more of the day there. Ask about steps, the entrance and room arrangements at the individual property. A town or bay address does not tell you whether the route works with a pushchair. Include the return journey after the activity, when everyone may be tired.

A woodland path and a boat trip are outdoor outings, even when listed among family activities. Build a rainy day around an indoor visit you can arrange. If indoor choice matters throughout the holiday, compare the activities in Kenmare with those in Killarney or Dingle. For accommodation costs, use quotes for the same dates and needs. Stay in town for evenings on foot, or outside it when the setting is worth the extra journeys.

Questions people ask

Is Kenmare town centre the best place to stay?

The centre suits a first visit with meals and sights on foot. Choose the outskirts for a particular setting or outing. Ask about the property's location and walking route before relying on a town-centre label.

Can you stay in Kenmare without a car?

Yes, when the buses fit your arrival and outings. Start with a central room, Bus Éireann route 270 and the Local Link routes. Arrange transfers separately for rural attractions away from the stops.

Is Kenmare a good base for the Ring of Kerry?

Kenmare suits the southern Ring and evenings in town. Consider another overnight for the western coast or a Skellig departure. Give the Ring and Beara separate days.

Should you stay in Kenmare or Killarney?

Choose Kenmare for the bay, southern Ring and Beara. Choose Killarney for the national park and a rail arrival. With a short stay, focus on the area you most want to visit.
