Where to stay on the Ring of Kerry
Stay in Killarney for a Ring of Kerry outing alongside a national park visit. Choose Kenmare for the southern Ring and Beara, or split the stay towards Waterville or the Skellig Coast for more time in the west.

Best for most people
Killarney
Best for: National park plus a Ring outing
- Walkable
- Car useful
Killarney has the railway station, lakes and national park for days around town. Stay here when the Ring is one part of the trip. A tour or other arranged transport can cover the coast if you arrive without a car.
Watch out: Keep time for the park on another day instead of expecting a full park visit within the Ring drive.
Kenmare
Best for: Southern Ring and a separate Beara outing
- Walkable
- Car useful
Kenmare has town sights, with the southern Ring and Beara for separate outings. A central room suits evenings back in town on foot. Choose the coastal stops you most want to visit rather than trying to cover both routes in a day.
Watch out: A Kenmare address can be out in the countryside.
Waterville
Best for: A southern coastal overnight
- Walkable
- Car useful
Waterville is a coastal overnight stop with Local Link routes towards Killarney and Kenmare. Stay here to break the journey along the southern coast. The bus connections need to fit the next day's outing if you are travelling without a car.
Watch out: A service connecting towns does not turn every beach, viewpoint or heritage site into a bus stop.
Cahersiveen
Best for: Western Iveragh and onward local connections
- Walkable
- Car useful
Cahersiveen has Local Link connections along the western Ring and towards Portmagee and Valentia. Stay here for western Iveragh or an onward bus journey. Choose by the next day's sights and the services you need.
Watch out: Older regional maps may differ from the operator's current route details.
Portmagee
Best for: A Skellig boat trip and Valentia detour
- Walkable
- Car useful
Portmagee has the harbour for Skellig trips and a bridge to Valentia. Stay here when a confirmed boat booking or an island visit deserves a day of its own. Allow time for the detour from the main Ring route.
Watch out: A local stay does not guarantee a sailing, and a cruise without a landing is a different booking.
Sneem
Best for: A village overnight on the southern corridor
- Walkable
- Car useful
Sneem is on Local Link's Waterville to Kenmare route. A central village stay can break the journey along the southern Ring. Find the accommodation entrance and bus stop before choosing a room for an arrival on foot.
Watch out: Choose the actual village location carefully if the plan depends on walking from a bus stop.
Killarney or Kenmare for one base
Killarney suits a stay with one Ring outing and another day in the national park. Kenmare suits the southern Ring, with Beara on a different day. Staying in one town also leaves time for local visits if an outdoor activity is cancelled. Choose the base for the days you will spend around it as well as for the coastal drive. There is no need to change rooms for a single excursion.
For a full circuit, choose a few stops where you want to get out and spend time. For a walk, beach or heritage visit, a shorter route may suit you better. Returning to the same room can make the rest of the stay easier, but it limits the time available for western detours. Leave some of those out if the return would otherwise turn the outing into a day spent mostly driving.
Waterville or the Skellig Coast for a split stay
Portmagee suits a confirmed Skellig booking, Waterville breaks a southern coastal trip, and Cahersiveen suits western Iveragh or local bus connections. Add a night in one of these places when you want more than a passing stop in the west. Choose somewhere near the next day's main outing. Then pick stops on the journey there, leaving enough time to arrive and settle into the accommodation.
One heritage visit or coastal stop can be enough on a day when you are changing rooms. Ask about luggage storage if you will visit before check-in. For a Skellig trip, read the boat's cancellation terms separately from the accommodation terms. An extra night nearby leaves more room to change your plans, but it cannot promise a replacement sailing. Keep an outing on land that you would enjoy even if no boat leaves.
The Skellig Coast and Valentia need their own decision
Portmagee Harbour has seasonal departures for the Skellig Islands. Landing on Sceilg Mhichíl means steep, uneven steps and travel with a permitted operator. A non-landing cruise avoids that climb but remains a sea trip. Choose the trip that suits the group before booking a room around it. Before you go, check the boat's arrangements and cancellation terms, current bus connections and access to any attraction you will rely on.
The bridge from Portmagee reaches Valentia, with the Skellig Experience Visitor Centre beside it on the island. Its indoor visit gives you something to do on land when a boat trip is cancelled. Bray Head, Geokaun and the lighthouse are separate visits with outdoor sections and their own access needs. Weather that cancels a sailing may also make an exposed viewpoint unsuitable. Choose the fallback for the conditions on land.
Travelling the corridor without a car
Local Link Kerry lists route 280 through Waterville, Cahersiveen, Glenbeigh, Killorglin, Beaufort, Fossa and Killarney. Route 281 links Waterville, Caherdaniel, Castlecove, Sneem and Kenmare. Other listed services connect Cahersiveen, Portmagee and Valentia. These routes give you towns to compare for an overnight without a car. Build the stay around a service you can use, rather than choosing a remote room first and trying to reach it afterwards.
Bus travel works best around towns and connections. It gives you less freedom than a car to stop at viewpoints along the road. Include the walk from the stop to the property and from the stop to each attraction. Leave a fallback for a missed onward service. If you have a short visit and want several coastal stops in one day, compare a tour that includes the transport between them.
Access, families and other Kerry bases
Ask about parking, the guest entrance and the walk to the parts of town you will use. For a bus arrival, include the whole route with luggage. With children, choose a room that lets you finish the last outing without another complicated transfer. Compare quotes for the same dates and room needs. Town names alone do not establish price bands, and an address near the route may still be awkward to reach.
Dingle suits Slea Head and the Dingle Peninsula. Killarney suits the lakes and park when the Ring is optional. In poor coastal weather, an arranged indoor visit such as the Skellig Experience or a heritage house may suit better than the drive. With a very short Kerry stop, choose a smaller area and leave out the full circuit. That gives you time to visit the places along the way.
Questions people ask
Is Killarney or Kenmare better for the Ring of Kerry?
Killarney suits the national park and rail arrivals. Kenmare suits the southern Ring and a separate Beara outing. From either base, choose a few stops and leave time to visit them.
Should you stay in one place or split the Ring of Kerry?
One base suits a single Ring outing. Split the stay when the western coast, Valentia or a Skellig trip deserves a separate day. Choose the extra night near that outing.
Where should you stay for a Skellig Michael trip?
Stay near your operator's confirmed meeting point, with Portmagee a relevant harbour base. Read the landing or cruise details and cancellation terms. Keep an alternative on land in case the trip cannot go ahead.
Can you stay around the Ring of Kerry without driving?
Yes, along the bus routes when the connections fit. Remote rooms and attractions away from stops may need another transfer. A tour can cover a sightseeing day with several stops.
