Day trips worth taking

Any weather Best on a dry day

Half a day

  1. Strandhill Dry day

Strandhill has its beach, Shore Road and the National Surf Centre for a seaside visit or booked lesson. Take the S2 from Sligo and spend time in the village before the bus back.

Use the surf school's meeting point for the walk from the bus stop. The county advises against casual swimming at Strandhill.

  2. Rosses Point Dry day

Rosses Point has a beach for walks beside Sligo Bay. Take the S2 from Sligo for a local seaside outing without a surf booking or a wider county drive, returning by the same route.

Use the correct daytime or evening route map to identify the return stop before leaving the village.

  3. Drumcliffe and Lissadell Any weather

Drumcliffe's churchyard and Lissadell House bring together the Yeats and Gore-Booth connections in north Sligo. Go by car, allowing time for the churchyard and a house tour before returning to Sligo.

Set aside time for a house tour at Lissadell. Drumcliffe's churchyard is a shorter outdoor visit.

  4. Glencar Waterfall Dry day

Glencar in neighbouring County Leitrim has a wooded waterfall walk, a nearby lake and a playground among its visitor facilities. Go by car from Sligo for a gentler outdoor outing than a mountain hike.

Keep the outing at Glencar with a car or arranged transfer to the visitor area. A nearby road-junction bus stop still leaves a final journey.

  5. Lough Gill and Parke's Castle Any weather

Parke's Castle is a restored fortified manor on Lough Gill's Leitrim shore, with time indoors during the visit. Go by car and add one woodland stop, such as Hazelwood in suitable weather, before returning to Sligo.

Book any lake sailing separately from the castle visit; allow time for each outing if you want to do both.

  6. Mullaghmore Dry day

Mullaghmore has a fishing village, harbour and sandy beach on the north coast. Go by car and spend time beside the shore before returning to Sligo, leaving the other northern sights for another day.

Book a boat activity separately if you want one, with time at the village, harbour and beach around the departure.

A full day

  1. Enniscrone and an optional Ballina stop Dry day

Enniscrone has beach time on the southwest coast, with Ballina and the River Moy as an optional extension. Take route 458 from Sligo or go by car, leaving time at the beach and any Ballina stop before returning.

For Ballina, allow for the extra bus journey as well as time by the River Moy. Keep enough of the day for Enniscrone's beach and the return to Sligo.

  2. Donegal Town Any weather

Donegal Town has its castle, railway museum and harbour for a local day. Take Expressway route 64 from Sligo, visit one or two of those sights and return by bus, leaving rural Donegal for another trip.

Fit a booked waterbus sailing between the outward and return buses if a cruise is the main reason for visiting.

The clearest trips by public transport

The S2 links Sligo with Strandhill and Rosses Point. Choose one village for a short outing, giving the beach walk or surf lesson the time it needs. Transport for Ireland publishes daytime and evening route maps, which should be used for the actual boarding and return stops. The two coastal destinations do not need to be visited together simply because they share a route.

Route 458 connects Sligo with Enniscrone and Ballina, while Expressway route 64 connects Sligo and Donegal Town. Give Enniscrone or Donegal Town its own day, with time at the destination between the outward and return buses. Keep the day close to the town or beach reached by the bus. For a rural attraction beyond the town or beach, you need another transfer. Stay near the bus destination for a simpler day, with more time for the beach, castle or museum before travelling back.

Choose a car route with one main visit

For a north-coast day, choose between a literary and house visit at Drumcliffe and Lissadell, or time at Mullaghmore's beach and harbour. Give a Lissadell house tour time of its own, with Drumcliffe as the shorter stop. For a day spent mostly outdoors by the sea, make Mullaghmore the main destination instead.

For Lough Gill, Parke's Castle and one forest stop provide enough variety. Hazelwood has a flat lakeside loop, while Slish Wood has lakeshore and hillside walking. Choose the walk that matches the group rather than adding both automatically. Glencar is another distinct Leitrim outing, with a wooded waterfall visit and visitor facilities. Choose Glencar for the waterfall and lake, or Parke's Castle with Hazelwood or Slish Wood for a Lough Gill day. Leave the other route for another outing from Sligo.

Rain choices and family plans

Parke's Castle and a Lissadell house visit offer time indoors, while Donegal Town offers the castle and railway museum. Check operators' sites before you go for house and castle visits, boat trips, surf requirements and bus returns. Glencar and the coastal villages remain outdoor trips, even though there may be somewhere to pause between showers. If persistent rain removes the main reason for leaving Sligo, The Model provides a useful local alternative.

For younger children, choose a Rosses Point beach outing, Hazelwood or Glencar's shorter visitor-area plan. Glencar's facilities include a playground. Older children may prefer a surf lesson at Strandhill, subject to the school's requirements. Donegal's railway museum adds a specific indoor activity for a longer town day. Give the family time at the beach, waterfall or museum. A playground stop at Glencar or a longer look at the railway models can be enough without adding another distant stop.

Return plans and trips to leave out

A Sligo-to-Donegal Town day should remain a town visit. Slieve League, Glenveagh and Inishowen are separate destinations with further journeys, not nearby additions to the bus arrival. Likewise, an Enniscrone day does not need to become a complete Mayo tour. Choose Ballina as the optional extension only if the return and the time wanted at the beach both still work.

For rural car trips, finish the main attraction before adding a short extra stop. Spend time looking around the castle, touring the house or walking beside the lake before deciding whether to go elsewhere. If the actual return bus no longer fits, cut the optional activity rather than relying on an unbooked taxi from a rural site. For a bus day, finish near the return stop: in Strandhill or Rosses Point for the S2, Enniscrone for route 458, or Donegal Town for route 64.

Questions people ask

What day trips can you take from Sligo by bus?

The S2 serves Strandhill and Rosses Point. Route 458 serves Enniscrone and Ballina, while route 64 reaches Donegal Town. Keep the visit close to the bus destination, leaving time for the beach or town before the return journey.

Is Donegal a good day trip from Sligo?

Donegal Town can work for the castle, railway museum and harbour with a route 64 journey there and back. Spend the day in the town itself. Keep the distant cliffs, national park and Inishowen for separate plans.

Can you visit Glencar without a car?

Use a prearranged transfer to the waterfall visitor area and back. A stop at a nearby road junction still leaves the final part of the journey to Glencar. The car route above takes you to the waterfall area itself.

Which Sligo day trip is best in poor weather?

Compare Parke's Castle, a Lissadell house visit or Donegal Town's museums and castle. If the weather rules out the coastal trip, stay in Sligo for The Model instead.
