Day trips worth taking

Any weather Best on a dry day

Half a day

  1. Ardara and Assaranca Waterfall Dry day

Assaranca Waterfall is on the road from Ardara towards Maghera and can be seen from the roadside visitor area. Go by car to Ardara and the falls for a shorter outing without a long hike, then return to Donegal Town.

Use the small roadside visitor area described by the county tourism office and keep the waterfall as the specific stop planned.

  2. Bundoran Dry day

Bundoran has Main Beach, the promenade and the Rougey Walk for a seaside day, with bowling as an indoor alternative. Take a route 480 journey that stops at the resort or go by car, returning to Donegal Town afterwards.

Choose the central seafront or Tullan Strand, allowing for the walk from your arrival stop to that side of the resort.

  3. Glebe House and Gallery Any weather

Glebe House and Gallery near Lake Gartan has art, house history and woodland gardens. Go by car for the house and gallery, adding the gardens in suitable weather before returning to Donegal Town.

Take a guided tour to visit the house, then add the woodland gardens if the weather suits.

A full day

  1. Slieve League Dry day

Slieve League's Bunglas viewpoint is the place to begin a first visit to the cliffs. Go by car from Donegal Town for time at the viewpoint, with only short extra southwest stops before returning.

Only experienced walkers should continue beyond the viewpoint towards One Man's Pass, according to the official visitor advice.

  2. Glencolmcille Folk Village Any weather

Glencolmcille Folk Village has cottages and local history beside Glen Beach, with indoor rooms and outdoor walks between buildings. Go by car for the museum and time at the beach in suitable weather, then return to Donegal Town.

Add Glen Beach opposite the folk village in suitable weather, after time at the cottages.

  3. Glenveagh National Park Dry day

Glenveagh has a lakeside, castle gardens and park trails for a full day by car. By bus, take route 64 to Letterkenny and Local Link 971 to the visitor centre, allowing for the same connections on the return.

Plan the internal journey from the visitor centre to the castle separately, using the park's current walking and visitor-bus information.

  4. Dunfanaghy and Ards Forest Park Dry day

Ards Forest Park has marked trails on the north coast, with Dunfanaghy as a village stop afterwards. Go by car and give the forest most of the day, adding village or beach time before returning to Donegal Town.

Use the park map to choose a suitable trail, rather than adding the longest circuit after a separate beach outing.

  5. Sligo Town Any weather

The Model, the Garavogue and Sligo Abbey make a cultural town visit, with the gallery for the wettest part of the day. Take Expressway route 64 from Donegal Town and return by coach, saving Sligo's coast for another outing.

Leave time to get back to the return coach after the gallery, river or abbey visit. Save Strandhill and Rosses Point for another day.

Choose an outing from Donegal Town

These trips return to Donegal Town. The Diamond, Castle Street and harbour belong to the local visit, while the destinations above need another journey. Slieve League is a southern outing, while Glenveagh and Dunfanaghy take you north. These trips start in Donegal Town; a stay in Buncrana or Dunfanaghy puts you near different sights.

Give each day one main destination, with time to look around before returning to Donegal Town. Slieve League can be the main southwest outing, while Glencolmcille provides a separate day visiting cottages and learning about local life. Ardara and Assaranca make a smaller car plan. Glenveagh and Dunfanaghy are larger northern outings from this base, so give each its own day if it is a priority. Leave room to walk at Glenveagh or Ards instead of driving between every corner of the county.

Which journeys work by bus

Expressway route 64 connects Donegal Town with Sligo and Letterkenny. Sligo is the more straightforward destination for a town visit, with art at The Model and the ruined abbey to visit after arrival. Route 480 is another relevant corridor, and Bundoran's transport guide lists it as a resort connection. Choose a journey that lists Bundoran as a stop, with time for the seafront before the bus back.

For Glenveagh, the public-transport journey continues from Letterkenny on Local Link 971 to the visitor centre. The park then has its own journey to the castle area, either on foot or by visitor transport when available. Allow for all these stages on the outward and return journeys. Check operators' sites before you go for bus connections, the park's visitor transport and attraction dates. The intercity coach gets you to Letterkenny, where you still have the Local Link journey and the trip inside the park.

Coastal days and indoor replacements

Slieve League and Ards are outdoor destinations. Save the cliff viewpoint or a forest trail for suitable weather, and cut the exposed extra stops if the weather deteriorates. Assaranca can be admired from the roadside visitor area, but it is still outdoors. Keep rainwear for the stop, even though you can see the waterfall without a long walk from the roadside area.

Glebe House and Gallery offers guided house visits and art as an alternative to the exposed coast. The Model in Sligo also offers time indoors, while Sligo Abbey is exposed. In persistent poor weather, staying in Donegal Town for the castle and railway museum may be more useful than making a long outward journey. Save the longer drive for a day when you can enjoy the forest, gardens or coast outside.

Families, bigger routes and what to leave for another stay

For a family seaside day, choose Bundoran's central beach and bowling on Main Street as a separate indoor activity. For a heritage day, the folk village offers cottages and a beach opposite. Ards adds marked trails and a playground near the shore, but it needs its own substantial northern outing. Give the beach, cottages or forest a day of its own, choosing the activity the children will enjoy. Adding all three means another journey north as well as the southern seaside and heritage stops.

Keep Malin Head and a broad Inishowen circuit for a peninsula stay when possible. From Donegal Town, adding them after Glenveagh would leave little room at the park or coast. If the holiday needs both Slieve League and Inishowen, compare a moving itinerary with repeated return trips. Stay in southern Donegal for Slieve League and move to Inishowen for Malin Head and the peninsula's museums. Separate nights leave time at the sights instead of another return to Donegal Town.

Questions people ask

What are the best day trips from Donegal Town?

Choose Slieve League for the coast, Ardara and Assaranca for a shorter car outing, or Bundoran for a local seaside day. Glenveagh and the north coast are larger outings from this southern base and should be given separate days.

Can you take day trips from Donegal Town without a car?

Yes for bus trips such as Sligo on route 64 or Bundoran on route 480. Glenveagh requires a connection through Letterkenny to Local Link 971, followed by the park's own internal journey. Allow for the same stages on the way back to Donegal Town.

Can you visit Slieve League from Donegal Town?

Yes as a dedicated car outing in suitable conditions. Spend most of the visit at the viewing area, with only short stops elsewhere. The advanced route beyond the viewpoint is for experienced walkers, not a necessary part of a first visit.

What is a useful wet-weather day trip?

Compare Glebe House and Gallery with Sligo's Model for art and time indoors. If the journey would outweigh the activity, stay in Donegal Town for the castle and Railway Heritage Centre instead.
