Things to do in West Cork

Start with Clonakilty and Inchydoney for a first West Cork day. Choose Skibbereen and Lough Hyne, Bantry Bay and Glengarriff, or a full Mizen or Beara outing for another part of the region.

What to do

Any weather Best on a dry day

An hour or two

  1. West Cork Model Railway Village Any weather

The Model Railway Village shows the former railway and towns in miniature. Its indoor and outdoor play facilities make it a family visit with some regional history.

The visitor listing advises booking ahead where possible; the site has indoor and outdoor areas.

  2. Skibbereen Heritage Centre Any weather

Skibbereen Heritage Centre tells the Great Famine through the town's experience and local stories. Give this serious indoor history visit time before heading to the coast.

The visitor address is the Old Gasworks Building on Upper Bridge Street.

Half a day

  1. Inchydoney Beach Dry day

Inchydoney's strand near Clonakilty suits a beach walk or a booked surf lesson. Pair it with the town and leave time on the sand before adding another coast.

The beach listing points to the surf school and webcam; use the operator's guidance for lessons and conditions.

  2. Lough Hyne Dry day

The marine lake outside Skibbereen has shore viewpoints and a nearby hill walk. Choose a short stop beside the water or a longer walking outing to suit the group.

Picnic tables and shoreline viewpoints support a short stop; the higher trail is a separate walking choice.

  3. Bantry House and Garden Any weather

Bantry House has an art collection and Italian-style garden terraces above the bay. Visit the interior in wet weather, with the gardens for conditions that suit time outside.

The upper garden terraces include a long staircase, so choose the garden route to suit the group.

  4. Whiddy Island from Bantry Dry day

Whiddy has lakes and traces of military history, reached by ferry from Bantry. Make it an island walk on a Bantry day, with time in the mainland town too.

The ferry leaves Bantry Pier; fit the island walk around the operator's return crossing.

  5. Garinish Island from Glengarriff Dry day

Garinish's Italian and walled gardens are reached by boat from Glengarriff. Choose it for the gardens and harbour crossing, with any wildlife sightings as an extra.

Heritage Ireland notes uneven walkways and limited access in places, which affect the island route.

A full day

  1. Mizen Head Dry day

Mizen has a bridge, visitor centre and former signal station at the end of its peninsula. Give it a day from a suitable West Cork base, leaving Beara for a separate outing.

The visit includes crossing the arched bridge to the signal station, so choose it for a group comfortable with that outdoor route.

  2. Healy Pass Dry day

The Healy Pass links Adrigole and Lauragh across the Caha mountains. Plan an eastern Beara day around it if visibility is good and the group is comfortable with the winding road.

The named route is the R574 between Adrigole Bridge and Lauragh Bridge; it includes hairpin bends.

  3. Allihies mining history Dry day

Allihies has mining remains, a museum and coastal walks for a western Beara day. Spend more time in the museum in wet weather and keep the mining walk for better conditions.

The copper-mine tour describes surface remains and ends at the museum in the former Methodist church; do not expect an underground mine visit.

Clonakilty, Skibbereen or Bantry Bay

Clonakilty and Inchydoney make a town and beach day. Visit the Model Railway Village, then leave the strand as the main outdoor stop. If the beach is the reason for coming, spend less time in town. On a short holiday, an unhurried afternoon on the sand is enough without adding several distant viewpoints.

Skibbereen and Lough Hyne give you local history and time beside the lake. Start at the Heritage Centre if the subject interests you, then choose a short shore stop or a longer walk. Tragumna or Baltimore can replace that longer walk if you would prefer a beach or harbour outing.

Bantry House and Whiddy Island are reached from Bantry. Garinish and the nature reserve are Glengarriff outings. Choose one main visit and add time in the nearby town or village, rather than include every bay sight in one day. The itinerary gives a longer driving route, and the town guides cover each place in detail.

Indoor stops for a wet day

Clonakilty has the Blackpudding Visitor Centre. Skibbereen has its Heritage Centre, while Bantry Museum and Bantry House offer indoor visits when open. Choose an indoor stop near where you are staying when the forecast is poor. There are fewer indoor alternatives out on the headlands, so a town day can save a long drive.

The Model Railway Village includes indoor facilities, with displays and play outside too. Bantry House has interiors as well as gardens. Use the indoor parts in poor weather and allow a smaller day. Neither offers a completely sheltered version of the beach, garden and coast outings you might have chosen in sunshine.

Glengarriff Woods is outdoors, as are Garinish's boat crossing and garden paths. Mizen and the Healy Pass also need conditions that suit their views and routes. Move those outings to another day where possible. A shorter town visit is more rewarding than a long peninsula drive with little to see in poor visibility.

Family outings by age

For preschool children, choose model trains around Clonakilty or a short Inchydoney beach visit. Keep the return to your room simple. One local outing gives small children time to play, without the repeated transfers of a full drive around the region. You can add more coast on another day.

Primary-school children can try railway models, an operator-approved beach lesson or a planned island outing. Whiddy leaves from Bantry and Garinish from Glengarriff, so use the island near your base. Boarding and walking needs affect which trip suits the group, as well as interest in the crossing itself.

Teenagers may prefer Allihies's mining story, a longer walk around Lough Hyne, or Mizen's bridge and signal station. Choose for their interests and walking ability. The Heritage Centre covers the serious history of the Famine. The nature reserve is a walking outing, so each offers a different kind of day.

Transport choices and worthwhile cuts

Route 237 serves Clonakilty and Skibbereen, while route 236 serves Bantry and Glengarriff. Local Link 232 links bay settlements, with 253, 263, 265 and 266 services reaching other selected towns and peninsula locations. Check exact journeys, returns, ferry and attraction access before you go, including boarding and walking needs.

Without a car, choose fewer outings. A bus into Skibbereen leaves another transfer to Lough Hyne. A bus to a peninsula village gives time in that village, rather than a ready-made sightseeing circuit. The car-free guide compares overnight bases and the connections between them for a trip using public transport.

On a short holiday, choose Mizen or outer Beara as the main excursion. Each deserves time of its own. One island may also give the group enough of the crossing and walking experience they want. Leave a second for another visit and spend longer on the coast you have chosen.
