Where to stay in West Cork

Clonakilty is the best first base for a town stay with beach outings. Choose Skibbereen for Lough Hyne and Baltimore, Bantry for Bantry Bay, or Glengarriff for Garinish, the woods and eastern Beara.

Pick your base

Best for most people

Clonakilty

Best for: First visits, families and Inchydoney

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

The colourful town has the Model Railway Village and Blackpudding Visitor Centre, with Inchydoney's strands outside the centre. Stay here to mix days in town with beach outings.

Watch out: Inchydoney Beach is outside the town, so a central room leaves a separate beach trip.

Skibbereen

Best for: Lough Hyne, Tragumna and Baltimore outings

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

The Heritage Centre is on Upper Bridge Street, with shops and everyday town life nearby. Stay here for the south coast around Lough Hyne and Baltimore.

Watch out: The coast and Lough Hyne each need travel beyond the town.

Bantry

Best for: Bantry House, Whiddy Island and bay outings

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

Wolfe Tone Square and the working harbour give Bantry its town and waterfront. Visit Bantry House and its gardens, or take the ferry to Whiddy Island.

Watch out: Outer Beara and Mizen Head are separate excursions, not extensions of a town walk.

Glengarriff

Best for: Garinish Island, oak woods and eastern Beara

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Glengarriff is a small village beside a wooded harbour, with Blue Pool nearby. Garinish ferries leave from the village area, and the nature reserve has several walks.

Watch out: Garinish needs a ferry crossing and visitor access; the woods are another outdoor outing.

Castletownbere

Best for: A Beara stay and Bere Island

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

Castletownbere is a working fishing port and a town base on Beara. Stay for Bere Island ferries and peninsula walks if you want more than a drive through.

Watch out: It commits the stay to Beara rather than the beaches and towns farther east.

Allihies and Eyeries

Best for: Village stays and peninsula walking

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Allihies has mining history and coastal loops. Eyeries looks over Coulagh Bay and has the Creha Quay Loop. Choose the village nearest the walks you want to do.

Watch out: Outdoor walking is the main attraction, so persistent bad weather narrows the plan.

Baltimore

Best for: Harbour time and a coast-focused stay

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

Baltimore has a harbour and a walk towards the Beacon. Stay here for time on the coast, with Local Link buses connecting the village to Skibbereen.

Watch out: Clifftop and harbour activities offer less shelter than an indoor town museum.

Choose the south coast or Bantry Bay

Clonakilty has the Model Railway Village, Blackpudding Visitor Centre and Inchydoney nearby. That gives it the strongest mix of family attractions among these bases. Skibbereen suits outings to Lough Hyne, Tragumna and Baltimore. For a south-coast holiday, choose the group you most want to see and give each outing time.

Bantry has the house, market square, harbour and Whiddy Island. Glengarriff has Garinish and the woods, with Beara beyond. Stay on this side of West Cork if those places are the reason for the trip. A room in Clonakilty leaves more travelling to do for a holiday spent around Garinish and Bantry Bay.

Castletownbere, Allihies and Eyeries suit a stay on Beara itself. The fishing port, mining history and waymarked loops give you reasons to spend several days on the peninsula. Stay in a village for its walks and time nearby. Choose Glengarriff to combine eastern Beara with woodland and the island gardens.

Town nights, beach mornings and island plans

Clonakilty town suits evenings on foot, with a separate outing to Inchydoney. Stay at Inchydoney and the strand is nearby, with the town as the outing. The local Clonakilty guide compares those choices in more detail. Choose this part of the coast if you want both the town's attractions and beach time.

Skibbereen has the Heritage Centre and town services, with Lough Hyne and Tragumna outside the centre. A coastal address puts you nearer one of those places but may need extra transport. A listing described as Skibbereen can be outside town, away from both the Heritage Centre and the main bus stop.

Whiddy ferries leave from Bantry, Garinish boats leave from Glengarriff, and Bere Island has ferry links from the Castletownbere area. Choose the departure town for the island you want to visit. Check current ferries, attraction access and bus connections before you go, especially if you have another journey after the crossing.

Bantry suits a bay stay with plenty of time in town. Glengarriff suits a smaller village, woodland walks and gardens. There is enough on land to leave gaps between island visits. Bantry House and the town's heritage walk offer one kind of day; Glengarriff's reserve offers another.

Buses between West Cork bases

Bus Eireann route 237 links Cork, Clonakilty, Skibbereen and Goleen. Route 236 serves Cork, Bantry and Glengarriff. These are different ways into West Cork, so choose the route for the town where you are staying. Knowing that a property is somewhere in West Cork is not enough to choose the bus.

TFI Local Link route 253 links Clonakilty and Kinsale. Route 232 links Kilcrohane and Castletownbere through Bantry and Glengarriff. Route 263 is listed for Castletownbere and Allihies/Dursey. The 266 services link Baltimore and Skibbereen with further coastal destinations. Use the operator's route information for the exact journey and stops.

These buses can link overnight stays in the served towns and villages. Leave time when changing services or catching a ferry after a bus. A room in the centre keeps the final part of the arrival simpler. For rural accommodation, arrange the transfer from the stop rather than relying on a night walk along an unfamiliar road.

A car helps when you want several beaches, Lough Hyne and peninsula stops in the same holiday. Without one, choose fewer outings and spend more time in the town or village. Bantry with a Whiddy trip works without promising the same sights as a driving holiday around Beara.

Split a longer trip and cut distant additions

A longer driving holiday can start on the south coast and finish around Bantry Bay. Stay in Clonakilty or Skibbereen first, then move to Bantry or Glengarriff. Each base puts a different group of sights nearer. You can explore both parts of West Cork without driving back to the eastern towns after every bay outing.

On a short visit, leave out the extra peninsula. Clonakilty has enough for a holiday without Mizen Head, and Glengarriff does not need a visit to every Beara village. Mizen has its own bridge, signal station and visitor route. Give it a separate outing if you want to see it.

Clonakilty has the Blackpudding Visitor Centre and an adult distillery option for poor weather. Skibbereen has its Heritage Centre, and Bantry Museum is a small local-history stop when open to visitors. Garinish gardens, the village loops and the Baltimore Beacon are all outdoors, so rain may mean changing those outings.

Kinsale suits Charles Fort and the Scilly Walk. Cork city suits museums and train trips. Use the wider County Cork guide to compare those alternatives with West Cork. Stay farther west when the holiday is about its towns, bay and peninsulas, rather than returning east for most of the things you want to do.
