Things to do on Achill Island

Start with Keem and Keel, then choose the Deserted Village for history outdoors. Pick the aquarium at Keel when rain rules out the beach.

What to do

Any weather Best on a dry day

An hour or two

  1. Keem Beach Dry day

Keem sits at the head of a valley beyond Dooagh, with mountains and cliffs around the bay. Give it most of your western outing, with time on the beach as well as views from the approach road.

Keem is beyond route 450's listed Dooagh stop, so bus visitors need a separate transfer for the final part of the journey.

  2. Keel Beach Dry day

Keel has a beach with a village and organised water activities nearby. Stay here for a local beach day or a shorter outing when travelling farther to Keem would leave too little time on the sand.

Book a water activity with a listed provider, using its meeting point for your journey to the lesson.

  3. The Deserted Village at Slievemore Dry day

The remains of stone cottages at the foot of Slievemore show past island settlement. Visit for a closer look at the cottages, keeping them as an outdoor history outing of their own.

Visit the cottage remains as their own outing; the site's position below Slievemore does not require a summit attempt.

  4. Kildavnet Tower Dry day

The surviving tower house connects the island's history with Grace O'Malley. It is a specific heritage stop on the Atlantic Drive and adds a history stop to a drive along the southern coast.

Stop here during an Atlantic Drive outing so the tower and southern coast fit into the same day.

  5. Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre Any weather

The aquarium at Keel combines marine life with displays about island history and a recreated boley house. Visit for marine life and island history indoors, especially with a family wanting a change from the beach.

Spend the wettest part of a Keel day inside the aquarium, with its marine life, history displays and recreated boley house.

Half a day

  1. Dugort beach and coast Dry day

Dugort is on Achill's north coast, away from the Keel and Keem side of the island. Spend time at its beach or take a booked water activity, leaving other parts of the island for another day.

Route 450 lists Dugort, making it one of the island villages to compare for a bus-based outing.

  2. The Atlantic Drive Dry day

The Atlantic Drive is a coastal touring route with places such as Kildavnet along the way. Choose it for a day when seeing the coast by road is the intended activity, with stops selected before leaving.

Achill Tourism describes the route for both car touring and cycling; choose the mode to suit the actual group and roads.

  3. The Great Western Greenway from the Achill side Dry day

The Greenway offers a cycling or walking outing on the island's mainland-facing side. It is a different day from travelling west to Keem, starting around Achill Sound and continuing towards Mulranny.

Choose a section and arrange hire through a listed route village instead of assuming a one-way bike collection is included.

A useful first-day sequence

The Michael Davitt Bridge brings you to Achill Sound. For Keem in suitable weather, follow the western road through Keel and Dooagh. Stop at Keel on the way out or back, leaving time actually to walk on a beach instead of moving constantly between viewpoints.

Add one different kind of visit afterwards. The Deserted Village brings the island's settlement history into the day, while the aquarium provides marine life and indoor displays at Keel. Choose between them according to conditions and interests. The Atlantic Drive is another substantial coastal outing, so leave it for a second day if the first has already been given to Keem. The time groups allow for each activity. Add the travel from the village where you start, especially for a western beach day from Achill Sound or a return journey to Westport.

What the bus reaches

Bus Eireann route 450 connects Westport with Achill Sound, Dugort, Keel and Dooagh. Use it for a visit around one of those villages, or to reach a room where you will stay on the island. It does not list Keem among its stops. For Keem, arrange the extra journey west from Dooagh. A ticket to Dooagh gets you to the village, with the beach still farther along the road.

Achill Tourism lists taxis, bicycle hire and TFI Anseo among the alternatives for getting around. Book Anseo through the service for both the pickup and return. If the final Keem transfer cannot be secured, keep the day around Keel or Dugort. Keel has a beach and aquarium, while Dugort has its own shore. Either keeps the final activity near the bus route, without an unplanned walk along the western road to catch a connection.

Rain and family choices

The Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre is the clear indoor option here. Its history displays explain island life alongside the marine exhibits, including a recreated boley house. A visit can go with a separate trip to the Deserted Village. Check operators' sites before you go for aquarium dates, activity requirements and booked transport.

For younger children, choose one beach and a short additional visit rather than the entire Atlantic Drive and both western beaches. Older children accepted by a provider may prefer a water activity with an instructor. The Deserted Village, tower and Greenway remain outdoors. If persistent rain rules out a beach day and the aquarium is unavailable, keep the outing short and spend more of the day near your room. The coastal drive is still an outdoor sightseeing trip.

What to skip and when to stay overnight

Skip a remote walking extension unless you know the route and it matches the group's experience. Achill Tourism describes Annagh as accessible only to hillwalkers or sailors, so leave it out of a day spent at easily reached beaches. Likewise, a visit to the cottage remains below Slievemore should not quietly become an improvised mountain hike.

Stay overnight when the island is the main reason for the Mayo trip. Keel suits beach time and the aquarium, Dooagh suits the western approach to Keem, and Dugort offers the north-coast alternative. An island night lets the Greenway or Atlantic Drive occupy a separate day from the western beaches. For a day from Westport, spend time in one part of the island and leave room for the return journey.

Questions people ask

What should you see on Achill Island in a day?

Make Keem the main stop, add Keel and choose either the Deserted Village or the aquarium. Leave a full Atlantic Drive and Greenway outing for another day. A bus-based visit needs a separate final transfer if Keem is essential.

Can you get to Keem Beach by bus?

Route 450 lists Achill Sound, Dugort, Keel and Dooagh, but not Keem. The beach lies farther west beyond Dooagh. Arrange the final journey before setting out rather than assuming the village bus completes the beach trip.

What can you do on Achill in the rain?

Visit the Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre at Keel for marine life and island history indoors. The island's beaches, ruins and coastal routes remain outdoor plans, even when reached by car.

Is Achill better as a day trip or an overnight stay?

A day trip works for time in one part of the island. Stay overnight if Keem, the Atlantic Drive and a Greenway outing all matter. Choose the village according to the shore or activity that will occupy most of the stay.
