Day trips worth taking

Any weather Best on a dry day

Half a day

  1. National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park Any weather

Turlough Park has galleries about rural Irish life, with gardens and a woodland playground outside. Travel by car from Westport for the indoor exhibits, then add the grounds if the weather suits.

If using public transport to Castlebar, arrange the museum transfer separately, because Turlough Park is outside the town centre.

  2. Cong and its abbey Dry day

Cong Abbey stands on Abbey Street, with ruins to explore during a village visit. Go by car and spend time at the abbey and around Cong before returning to Westport, leaving the wider Connemara coast for another day.

Keep the abbey and village as the core of the trip, with enough time to visit the ruins rather than using Cong as a drive-through stop.

A full day

  1. Achill Island: choose Keel or arrange Keem Dry day

Keel and Dugort have local beach outings, while Keem is farther west beyond Dooagh. Take route 450 from Westport for Keel or Dugort, or go by car to Keem, leaving time on the island before returning.

For Keem, book the extra journey beyond the bus's Dooagh terminus and a return to the bus route.

  2. Murrisk and Croagh Patrick Dry day

Croagh Patrick at Murrisk is a difficult mountain climb, with a shorter lower-level village visit as an alternative. Take route 450 towards Louisburgh or travel by car, leaving time to descend and return to Westport.

Allow time to descend before the bus back. If the climb would make you miss it or conditions are poor, stay lower down around Murrisk.

  3. Louisburgh and the Lost Valley Dry day

The Lost Valley near Louisburgh has a working farm and famine-village remains to explore on a booked guided walk. Go by car, spend time on the farm and heritage walk, then return to Westport.

Route 450 reaches Louisburgh but does not take you to the farm. Arrange that final transfer separately if travelling without a car.

  4. Clare Island Dry day

Clare Island has a harbour beach, with walking and heritage visits around the island. Travel by car or a prearranged transfer to Roonagh Pier, then take the ferry out and return on your booked sailing.

Arrange both ferry crossings and the mainland pickup. From the Louisburgh bus stop, you still need transport to Roonagh.

  5. Wild Nephin at Ballycroy Dry day

Ballycroy Visitor Centre and the Tóchar Daithí Bán Trail offer a first visit to Wild Nephin. Go by car, adding the separate Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail only if there is time before returning to Westport.

Choose the park's named easier trails rather than treating the remote interior as a casual addition to a visitor-centre day.

  6. Leenane and Killary Harbour Dry day

Leenane is a village beside Killary Harbour, with views along the water. Take route 423 towards Clifden or go by car, arranging any boat trip or longer walk and its starting-point transfer separately before returning to Westport.

Route 423 gets you to Leenane. For a separate fjord activity, arrange the journey to its departure point and back to the bus.

The easiest day trips by bus

Route 450 serves several day-trip destinations from Westport. It links Westport with Murrisk and Louisburgh in one direction, and Newport, Mulranny and Achill villages in the other. Choose one of those villages or towns for the day. Murrisk supports a Croagh Patrick outing, while Keel or Dugort supports a local Achill day. Keem, the Lost Valley and Roonagh Pier need extra journeys beyond the bus stops at Dooagh or Louisburgh.

Route 423 provides another corridor, connecting Westport and Clifden through Leenane. Use it for a Leenane visit with an outward and return bus that leaves time in the village. Route 456 serves the Westport to Castlebar corridor, but Turlough Park still needs a final transfer from the town. A return day trip needs time at the destination as well as two journeys; choose fewer connections when only a short outing is wanted.

Achill as a day trip or an island night

For a bus day, Keel or Dugort is the clearest target because both appear on route 450. Keel offers beach time and the aquarium if it is operating. Keem is a different plan beyond Dooagh. Arrange the journey from Dooagh to Keem and back before setting off from Westport. If that transfer falls through, keep the day around Keel or Dugort, with a final activity near the return bus.

By car, give Keem most of the day and add one visit such as the Deserted Village. Leave the full Atlantic Drive or a Greenway cycle for another day. If several of those activities are essential, compare an overnight on Achill with a return day from Westport. An island night leaves more time at Keem, on the Greenway or along the Atlantic Drive. Give these activities separate days if they are all priorities, instead of shortening each visit to get back to Westport.

Getting to Clare Island and back

Clare Island's mainland departure is Roonagh, beyond the Louisburgh bus destination. Plan the transfer to the pier first, then the ferry. For the return, you need a ferry back to Roonagh and transport from the pier to Westport or the Louisburgh bus. Check operators' sites before you go for sailings, pickups, bus returns and attraction dates. Ferry sailings can change with the conditions.

Once on Clare Island, the harbour beach provides a local starting point, with walking and heritage choices added according to the available island time. Finish the last walk or heritage visit with time to reach the harbour for your booked ferry. If the crossing is unsuitable, choose a mainland outing such as the Turlough Park museum or a local Westport visit. If the operator cannot run the crossing, spend that day on the mainland and leave the island for another visit.

Weather, families and trips worth cutting

For persistent rain, the galleries at Turlough Park offer the most substantial indoor visit among these trips. The grounds and playground can be optional. Céide Fields and Downpatrick Head are another possible north Mayo plan on a longer stay, but give them a separate day with time at the archaeology and coast. Coastal and archaeological outdoor visits need their own suitable conditions.

For families, choose one main attraction: the museum, a booked Lost Valley visit or an Achill beach day. Croagh Patrick is a difficult mountain climb. Choose it for a group ready for the effort and weather suitable for the ascent and descent. Skip a large Connemara circuit after Leenane if the bus return already limits the day. For another day, spend time at Cong's abbey or walk one of Wild Nephin's easier trails before returning to Westport.

Questions people ask

Can you take a day trip from Westport to Achill by bus?

Yes. Route 450 serves Achill Sound, Dugort, Keel and Dooagh. Keem needs an additional transfer beyond Dooagh. Leave time for that return journey as well as the route 450 bus back to Westport.

Which Westport day trips work without a car?

Compare Murrisk, Louisburgh and the Achill villages on route 450, or Leenane on route 423. Rural attractions beyond those stops need another arrangement. Clare Island also requires a transfer from Louisburgh to Roonagh Pier.

What is a good rainy-day trip from Westport?

Choose the National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park for a substantial indoor visit. Plan the transfer to the museum itself. The grounds and playground can be added if the weather improves.

Can you visit Clare Island from Westport in a day?

It can work with a booked transfer to Roonagh and ferry crossings that leave time on the island. Arrange the return ferry and mainland pickup as well as the outward journey. The Louisburgh bus alone does not reach the ferry departure.
