Where to stay on Achill Island
Stay in Keel for a first Achill visit, with the beach and aquarium nearby. Choose Dooagh for western Achill and Keem trips, Dugort for the north coast or Achill Sound for the bridge and Greenway.

Pick your base
Best for most people
Keel
Best for: First island stay, beach activities, aquarium
- Partly walkable
- Car useful
Keel combines a beach setting with the Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre. It works as an island base when you want local time on the shore as well as trips to the Deserted Village and Keem.
Watch out: Keem lies farther west beyond Dooagh, so you still need to travel there from Keel.
Dooagh
Best for: Western Achill, the approach to Keem
- Partly walkable
- Car useful
Dooagh is the western village named on route 450, and the road to Keem continues beyond it. Stay here to spend several days in western Achill, with evenings on the island after your beach visits.
Watch out: The bus terminus in Dooagh does not provide a final ride to Keem Beach.
Dugort
Best for: North-coast beach time, water activities
- Partly walkable
- Car useful
Dugort is a north-coast village served by route 450, with beach and water activities promoted by Achill Tourism. Stay here for days on Achill's northern shore, with Keel and Keem as separate outings.
Watch out: Keel's aquarium and the western Keem road are separate outings from Dugort.
Achill Sound
Best for: Bridge arrival, Greenway, mainland connections
- Partly walkable
- Car useful
Achill Sound is at the island's road connection via the Michael Davitt Bridge. It suits a stay built around the Sound, the Greenway and trips between Achill and the mainland.
Watch out: Keel and Keem are farther into the island, so staying by the bridge means travelling across the island for those beach days.
Keel is the strongest first-stay choice
Keel has a beach and the Achill Experience Aquarium and Visitor Centre, giving you places to spend time outdoors and indoors without leaving the village. The aquarium also covers island history, including a recreated boley house. Spend a dry morning at the beach and a wet afternoon inside the aquarium. Check operators' sites before you go for attraction dates, activity rules, bus stops and book-ahead transport.
Use Keel when the wider island outings are Keem and the Deserted Village at Slievemore. Keem sits west of Keel, beyond Dooagh, while the Deserted Village is an outdoor heritage site beneath Slievemore. Neither needs to be rushed into the arrival afternoon. With a night on the island, you can give the beach and heritage site separate parts of your stay. There is no need to drive back to Westport straight after seeing Keel.
Dooagh and Dugort serve different sides of Achill
Dooagh makes sense for a western stay. Discover Ireland places Keem Beach beyond the village, reached on the western road from Keel. Choose Dooagh when that bay and the west of the island are the main interests. From Dooagh, you still need to travel along the western road to Keem. Save that outing for suitable weather and arrange the extra transport if you have arrived by bus.
Dugort is a village on Achill's north coast. Achill Tourism promotes water activities there, and Bus Eireann route 450 lists Dugort among its island stops. Stay here if you want to spend most days on the north coast, with the beach as a local outing. It is less useful if every morning begins with a journey back to Keel or west towards Keem.
Getting onto Achill and reaching the accommodation
Achill is connected to the mainland by the Michael Davitt Bridge, so driving onto the island does not require a ferry. Achill Tourism identifies rail arrivals at Westport or Castlebar as mainland options, with onward bus travel. For a simple car-free arrival through Westport, route 450 serves Achill Sound, Dugort, Keel and Dooagh. Use the stop in your chosen village, then walk or take a booked transfer to your room.
Achill Tourism also lists Local Link service 460a between Achill Sound and Castlebar, plus the TFI Anseo book-ahead service within the Achill and Curraun area. Book Anseo through the service before setting off. For accommodation beyond a village bus stop, arrange the final walk or transfer with the accommodation. This is part of the arrival journey too, especially with luggage or after an outdoor activity.
What you can do without driving every day
Keel has beach time and the aquarium, with water activities you can book for a suitable group and conditions. Dugort has its own north-coast shore. From Achill Sound, you can walk or cycle a section of the Great Western Greenway towards the mainland. Spend a day near your room before taking a separate trip across the island.
For a car-free Keem visit, arrange the transport beyond Dooagh as well as the route 450 bus journey. Achill Tourism lists taxis and bicycle hire among the alternatives. A bike trip uses the island roads, so choose it only if you are comfortable riding them. If the extra transfer falls through, spend the day around your own village. Keel's beach and aquarium, or Dugort's shore, let you enjoy the island without an unplanned road journey to Keem.
When a mainland base is more useful
Choose Westport if the main plans include its town streets, Westport Estate and Croagh Patrick, with Achill as one possible day out. Sleeping on Achill means travelling back to the mainland for those outings. Stay in Westport if you want to spend most days around the town and Clew Bay. Newport or Mulranny also suit a Greenway cycling trip with one island outing, rather than one centred on Keem and Keel.
Most places in this guide are outdoors. The aquarium is the obvious cultural and family stop, but the Deserted Village, Kildavnet Tower and the Atlantic Drive are outdoor experiences. A drive along the coast should not be treated as a substitute for a clear-weather beach or walking day. Stay on Achill to spend time at its beaches and villages. On a wet or windy day, keep outings short and close to your room, with the aquarium as the indoor choice.
Questions people ask
Where is the best place to stay on Achill Island?
Keel is the first recommendation for its beach, aquarium and position for island outings. Dooagh suits the western side towards Keem. Dugort suits the north coast, while Achill Sound is useful for the bridge and Greenway.
Can you stay on Achill without a car?
Yes, if the accommodation and activities are near the bus route. Route 450 serves Achill Sound, Dugort, Keel and Dooagh. Other trips may need a booked taxi, Anseo journey or suitable cycling plan. Keem requires an extra transfer beyond the listed bus stops.
Do you need a ferry to Achill Island?
No for a road arrival. The Michael Davitt Bridge connects Achill with the mainland. The bridge makes an island stay possible by car or bus, but it does not remove the journeys between the villages and beaches.
Is Achill Sound a good base for Keem Beach?
It is useful for arrival and the Greenway side of the island. Choose Keel or Dooagh if you want to spend most days at the western beaches. Keem is a separate onward outing beyond Dooagh, whichever village is chosen.
