Where to stay in Bundoran
Stay near Main Street and the central seafront for Main Beach and indoor family activities. Choose Tullan Strand Road for surfing or the West End for the western coastal walk.

Pick your base
Best for most people
Main Street and the central town
Best for: First visit, indoor activities, bus arrivals
- Walkable
- Car not needed
Main Street has bowling and amusements, with the central seafront reached on foot. Stay here if your group wants to split up for a beach visit, indoor games or a walk, then meet again in town without moving the car.
Watch out: Bundoran's own walking guide describes Main Street as bustling, so ask about the position of a bedroom facing the street.
The Promenade and Atlantic Way
Best for: Main Beach, Waterworld, seaside families
- Walkable
- Car not needed
The promenade links the central seafront with Main Beach, passing Waterworld and the outdoor amusements. Choose this side when the children will spend more time around the beach and waterpark than at the eastern end of town.
Watch out: The promenade's walks and amusements are outdoors; Waterworld has its own operating dates.
Tullan Strand Road and the east side
Best for: Surf lessons, Fairy Bridges, longer beach walks
- Partly walkable
- Car useful
Tullan Strand Road leads towards the beach and the Fairy Bridges, with the Rougey Walk linking the headland back towards town. Stay here to spend your days surfing at Tullan Strand and walking around the headland.
Watch out: The visitor guide advises against bathing at Tullan Strand because of rip currents; choose a surf school for an instructed activity.
The West End
Best for: West End coastal walk, sea views on foot
- Partly walkable
- Car useful
The western side gives access to Bundoran's other coastal walk and the views over Donegal Bay. It suits a stay where the daily walk starts west of the main seafront.
Watch out: Tullan Strand and the Fairy Bridges are on the opposite side of the town, so those outings start with a longer cross-town walk or transfer.
Choose the beach side that matches the holiday
Main Beach is beside Bundoran's central promenade, Waterworld and outdoor amusements. The promenade connects the beach with Waterworld and the outdoor amusements, while Main Street adds indoor games and bowling. You can walk between them and Main Street when the group wants a different activity. Stay on this side if a beach outing may need to become a waterpark or bowling visit.
Tullan Strand has a longer stretch of sand and suits a surfing stay. The official visitor guide describes access from Tullan Strand Road at the east end of Bundoran. The Fairy Bridges are nearby on the headland, and the Rougey route provides a way back around towards the town. A room on Tullan Strand Road puts that beach and headland walk first. For Waterworld, bowling and the central promenade, you will walk back into town.
What central Bundoran gives you on foot
Main Street, the Promenade and Atlantic Way are the central streets to look for. Waterworld is on Atlantic Way, while Bundoran Glowbowl is on Main Street. Main Beach sits at the eastern end of the central promenade before the Rougey headland path continues around the coast. A central stay suits a group that wants to separate for an activity and meet again without several pickup journeys.
The official town map also shows Station Road, Church Road and the River Bradoge, which help distinguish the centre from the eastern Tullan approach and the western side. Compare the street address with Main Street, the Promenade or Tullan Strand Road to see which part of town you will be staying in. If the main plan is bowling and Main Beach, a distant coastal address adds walking before the activity begins. If most days are for Tullan surf lessons, stay near that beach and visit the centre separately.
Arriving without a car
Bundoran's visitor transport guide lists Bus Eireann route 480 on the Sligo to Derry corridor. Sligo has Irish Rail services from Dublin Connolly, so you can arrive by train and continue by bus. Choose accommodation near your Bundoran arrival stop, especially with luggage. The east side, centre and West End are different places to finish the journey.
Once staying centrally, the promenade, Main Beach and Main Street can form the holiday without a car. Tullan Strand and the Fairy Bridges are also linked by the walking routes, but exposure and the walk back need to suit the group. A car-free Bundoran stay works best when Bundoran itself is the destination. For Slieve League, Glenveagh and Inishowen, you need transport beyond the resort. Stay here for days in Bundoran itself and arrange wider Donegal trips separately.
Families, rain and the limits of the resort
Waterworld offers indoor swimming attractions on the seafront, and the visitor guide identifies a toddler pool as well as larger slides. Check operators' sites before you go for attraction dates, age and supervision rules, surf lesson meeting points and your bus stops. For young children, put the toddler pool first when choosing activities at Waterworld. A promenade stay keeps these options near Main Beach.
Bowling on Main Street is another distinct wet-day option. The town map also identifies the cinema by Station Road, which may suit an older family group after the outdoor plan is shortened. Bowling and a film give you two ways to spend time indoors away from the beach. The coastal walks remain outdoor activities even when they begin beside indoor venues. If the headland is unpleasant, stay with the town's indoor choices instead of pressing on towards the Fairy Bridges in poor conditions.
When another Donegal base makes more sense
Choose Donegal Town instead if the castle, railway museum and bay cruise are more appealing than Bundoran's resort activities. You can spend a short break walking between the castle, railway museum and harbour. Choose a northern base if the essential sights are Glenveagh or Inishowen. Stay in Bundoran when its beaches, surf lessons and coastal paths are the things you want to spend time on.
For a mixed south Donegal trip, keep Bundoran as the seaside part and give the wider touring days their own route. For one day at Slieve League, any Bundoran area still leaves you with an outing away from the resort. If most days will be spent elsewhere, compare Donegal's towns in the county guide. Stay near Main Beach, Tullan Strand or the Rougey Walk when you want to walk out to those places each day.
Questions people ask
Where is best to stay in Bundoran with children?
Compare the Promenade and Atlantic Way with central Main Street. They put Main Beach, Waterworld and indoor games into the same local holiday. Waterworld has a toddler pool as well as larger slides, while bowling adds another indoor choice on Main Street.
Can you stay in Bundoran without a car?
Yes for a holiday centred on the town, beaches and walking routes. Arrive on route 480 and choose a central address near the stop. Wider Donegal sightseeing needs a separate transport plan rather than relying on Bundoran's walkability.
Should surfers stay near Tullan Strand?
Tullan Strand Road is worth choosing if lessons there are the main daily plan. Match the accommodation address to the school's meeting point so the lesson is easy to reach on foot. The tourist office advises against casual bathing at Tullan Strand because of strong rip currents.
Is Main Beach or the West End better?
Main Beach suits a holiday using the central promenade and Waterworld. The West End suits the western coastal walk. Choose Main Street or the Promenade for the broadest range of local activities, and the West End when that coastal setting is the reason to stay.
