Pick your base

Best for most people

Westport town

Best for: First visit, rail arrivals, Clew Bay

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

Westport's centre is around the Carrowbeg River, with town streets for a walk after dinner. Westport Estate and the Quay are local outings, so you can mix town time with days by Clew Bay.

Watch out: The Quay is a separate district from the centre. Choose which one you want to walk around in the evening.

Keel, Achill Island

Best for: Beach days, surf activities, island nights

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Keel has a beach and the Achill Experience Aquarium. Stay here to spend your days on Achill's shore and your nights on the island, without returning to the mainland after each outing.

Watch out: Keem is beyond Dooagh, so staying in Keel does not put that beach outside the door.

Newport

Best for: Greenway trips, smaller-town stay

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

Newport sits on the Great Western Greenway between Westport and Mulranny, with its viaduct and St Patrick's Church giving the town a recognisable centre. Choose it to make cycling the main activity.

Watch out: Westport Estate, Croagh Patrick and the Quay need a separate journey from this base.

Mulranny

Best for: Clew Bay, Greenway and Achill access

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Mulranny is a coastal village beside Clew Bay and on the Greenway route. Stay here for cycling and time by the bay, with Achill as a separate outing.

Watch out: The beaches at Keel and Keem are on Achill, so a Mulranny stay still involves an onward journey.

Castlebar

Best for: Turlough Park museum, rail access

  • Partly walkable
  • Car useful

Castlebar gives you a mainland town base for a trip centred on the National Museum at Turlough Park. The Castlebar to Turlough Greenway provides a walking or cycling outing as well as the museum visit.

Watch out: The museum is at Turlough Park outside Castlebar's centre. Allow for the trip there when choosing a room in town.

Ballina

Best for: River Moy, north Mayo, onward travel to Sligo

  • Walkable
  • Car useful

Ballina is a town on the River Moy and a useful base when the northern side of Mayo is the priority. It also connects with Sligo on Bus Eireann route 458 via Enniscrone.

Watch out: A Ballina stay shifts the trip away from Westport and Achill, so keep those for another base if both need substantial time.

Westport, Achill and north Mayo

Westport is the best starting point for Clew Bay. The Great Western Greenway, the Quay and Westport Estate give a short break several distinct local days. Murrisk and Croagh Patrick fit the same general holiday. Stay in Westport if you want to arrive by train, walk around town and take separate trips to the coast.

Achill deserves its own nights when Keem, Keel and the Deserted Village are the main reasons for travelling. The island is reached by the Michael Davitt Bridge, so no ferry booking is needed to arrive by road. Ballina is on the northern side of the county. For Downpatrick Head and Céide Fields, compare a north Mayo base with Westport before committing to repeated cross-county outings.

Where a car-free Mayo stay works

Irish Rail's Dublin Heuston to Westport route serves Castlebar before Westport. Ballina is on the branch through Foxford and Manulla Junction. Choose Westport, Castlebar or Ballina as your destination when booking. Ballina's branch means it has a different journey from Westport. Check rail and bus connections and attraction operating dates on the operators' sites before you go.

Bus Eireann route 450 runs between Dooagh and Louisburgh via Westport. Its stops include Newport, Mulranny, Achill Sound, Dugort and Keel on the island side, plus the Quay and Murrisk on the Louisburgh side. That makes Westport a useful base for individual bus outings. It does not make every Mayo beach or rural trailhead reachable from a bus stop. For north Mayo and cliff sites, arrange the onward transport separately.

Town centre, harbour or village

In Westport, a central stay suits evenings around the river and the Octagon. A Quay stay puts Clew Bay Heritage Centre and boat departures closer to the daily plan. Choose the river and Octagon for evenings in the centre, or the Quay for a stay near the harbour. The Westport accommodation guide compares those areas in more detail.

Newport and Mulranny both suit a cycling holiday on the Great Western Greenway. Newport adds its town streets, viaduct and church, while Mulranny puts the coastal village and Clew Bay first. Newport suits a smaller town stay with cycling from your base. Mulranny suits time beside Clew Bay as well as Greenway outings. For either village, leave room to enjoy the places nearby instead of returning to Westport for every activity and evening.

Family days and wet-weather choices

The National Museum of Ireland at Turlough Park gives the Castlebar side of Mayo a substantial indoor outing. The galleries cover rural life, and the grounds add gardens, a lake and a woodland playground. Spend the wettest part of the day in the galleries. Add the gardens, lake and woodland playground in a dry spell. This gives families a day away from the mountains and exposed coast.

Westport Estate combines the historic house with grounds and an adventure park. The house offers time indoors, while the grounds and adventure park are outside. On Achill, the aquarium is another indoor stop. For a family staying in Keel, it can break up a beach day when rain arrives. Save the outdoor parts of either visit for better weather.

When to change bases

For a short Westport break, keep Achill as either one day out or a separate stay. Trying to add the island, Wild Nephin and north Mayo's cliffs to every Westport visit leaves little room for the town and Clew Bay. If Keem is the priority, sleep on Achill and save the clearest weather for the western side of the island.

A longer county visit can move between Westport or Achill and Ballina. Stay near Clew Bay or on the island first, then move north when you want to see that coast. Céide Fields combines a visitor centre with exposed outdoor archaeology, while Downpatrick Head is an outdoor coastal stop. Pair them on a day when the weather suits exposed coastal visits. In poor conditions, keep the Turlough Park galleries as a separate mainland alternative and leave the headlands for better weather.

Questions people ask

Is Westport the best place to stay in Mayo?

Westport suits a first Clew Bay visit, especially if you are arriving by train. Achill is better for an island holiday, while Ballina suits days in north Mayo. Westport, Achill and Ballina each put a different part of Mayo nearby.

Should you stay in Westport or on Achill?

Choose Westport for town evenings and a mix of Greenway, estate and Clew Bay outings. Choose Keel or another Achill village when the island's beaches and coastal scenery are the main purpose. The bridge means driving onto Achill does not need a ferry.

Can you visit Mayo without a car?

Yes, especially from Westport using rail, local walks and route 450. Castlebar and Ballina also have rail access. Rural cliff sites and some trailheads need a separate transport plan, so keep a car-free stay near the railway or route 450 and arrange other transfers separately.

Where should a family stay in County Mayo?

Westport suits a mix of estate activities, cycling and town time. Keel suits island days spent at the beach. Castlebar is worth comparing if the Turlough Park museum is central to the plan. The museum galleries offer an indoor outing, with gardens and a playground outside.
