What to do

Any weather Best on a dry day

An hour or two

  1. The Carrowbeg River and town centre Dry day

The Malls follow the Carrowbeg River, with the Octagon and central streets nearby. Walk here on your first afternoon in Westport, County Mayo, before taking longer trips to the coast or countryside.

The Octagon and river mark the centre; visit the Quay as a separate district later in your stay.

  2. Clew Bay Heritage Centre Any weather

The centre at the Quay covers Westport and the wider bay through artefacts, documents and photographs. Visit for local history indoors, then add a walk around the Quay for more time in the same district.

Combine the exhibits with a look around the Quay, since the heritage centre is in that district rather than on the Octagon.

  3. A Clew Bay cruise Any weather

A cruise from the Quay offers views of the bay's islands and the surrounding coast. The listed vessel has an outdoor deck and indoor lounge, so you can sit outside for the views or spend part of the sailing indoors.

Use the indoor lounge when the open deck is uncomfortable; sailings depend on conditions and the operator.

  4. Westport Town Hall Theatre Any weather

The theatre on the Octagon offers a programme of performances, workshops and exhibitions. Choose a performance, workshop or exhibition for a town evening or an afternoon indoors away from the coast.

Book a particular performance or activity from the theatre's programme.

Half a day

  1. Westport Estate Any weather

Westport Estate has a historic house, gardens, woodland and family adventure activities. Choose a house visit or an adventure activity, with time in the gardens and woods when the weather suits.

Set aside time for the house visit or activity you choose, with gardens and woodland added in dry weather.

  2. A selected Great Western Greenway section Dry day

The Greenway gives Westport a cycling or walking day towards Newport and the wider Clew Bay route. Choose a section that matches the group instead of making the entire trail to Achill the target.

Bike hire is available in the towns along the route; agree equipment and any collection with the chosen provider.

  3. National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park Any weather

Outside Westport, the Turlough Park galleries provide a substantial account of Irish rural life. This is the clearest museum outing for a wet day, with gardens and a woodland playground added if conditions improve.

Plan the transfer to Turlough Park itself rather than treating a journey to Castlebar centre as arrival at the museum.

A full day

  1. Croagh Patrick from Murrisk Dry day

Croagh Patrick is a difficult mountain climb above Clew Bay, with views across the bay. Give it a separate day with suitable mountain weather and a group ready for the climb, leaving Achill for another outing.

Wear solid footwear and appropriate clothing, following the official mountain advice, and allow the descent to govern any booked return.

A first Westport day without a long drive

The Carrowbeg River and Octagon are the places to start a first Westport day. The Malls give the town its riverside setting, and Town Hall Theatre stands on the Octagon and has performances, workshops and exhibitions. This suits an arrival day by train, when there is little reason to head immediately back out of town for a distant attraction.

Choose the Quay as the second part of the day if local history and the bay appeal. Clew Bay Heritage Centre and the cruise departure area are there. Westport Estate is another substantial local option, so choose between a full estate visit and an afternoon at the Quay rather than hurrying through both. Spend the first day in Westport itself: around the river, at the estate or beside the harbour. Leave Achill for a separate outing with more time on the island.

A wet-weather plan for Westport

Use Clew Bay Heritage Centre for a smaller indoor visit, or the house at Westport Estate if its visitor programme fits. Town Hall Theatre adds performances, workshops and exhibitions on its programme. Check operators' sites before you go for events, house and adventure activities, participant rules, sailings and bus returns. In persistent rain, spend time at these indoor venues and save the Greenway and mountain for better conditions.

For a larger museum visit, make the journey to the National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park. Its galleries cover rural Irish life, and its outdoor grounds can wait for a break in the rain. That is a separate outing outside Westport, so plan transport to the correct site. A cruise has an indoor lounge, but sailing conditions and operator decisions still govern whether it runs. For a stormy day, choose a museum on land instead of making the cruise the main outing.

Westport with children

For younger children, compare an estate visit with a short Greenway outing. Choose an estate activity that accepts the children's ages and abilities, or make the historic house and grounds the visit. On the Greenway, select a manageable out-and-back section or agree an organised collection. A short cycle leaves time to stop beside Clew Bay or in a village. There is no need for younger riders to reach the far end of the route.

Turlough Park adds a woodland playground to the galleries when the weather allows, making it a strong mixed indoor-and-outdoor family day. The Quay and heritage centre suit a smaller local outing. Croagh Patrick is a difficult mountain climb, according to the official advice. Choose it only when the group is ready for the effort and exposed mountain conditions, with enough time for the descent and return journey.

Buses, bigger outings and what to cut

Route 450 connects Westport with the Quay, Murrisk and Louisburgh, and in the other direction with Newport, Mulranny and Achill villages. It can support a specific day out, provided the return fits. The Greenway is a separate walking and cycling route, so agree where a hired bike will be returned or collected. A one-way cycle needs that arrangement as well as your own journey back.

Leave Achill, Clare Island, Wild Nephin and the north Mayo cliffs to the day-trips comparison. Each can be a substantial outing from Westport, and none is a useful last-minute addition after a Croagh Patrick climb. For a short visit, keep the town and one main outdoor day. If the summit forecast is unsuitable, cut the climb and choose the estate or museum. There is no need to replace a cancelled mountain plan with an even wider driving circuit.

Questions people ask

What is there to do in Westport with kids?

Compare Westport Estate, a short Greenway outing and the museum at Turlough Park. The Quay and heritage centre offer a smaller local plan. For younger children, start with a short cycle or an estate visit. Turlough Park combines indoor galleries with an outdoor playground.

What can you do in Westport when it rains?

Use Clew Bay Heritage Centre, a house visit at Westport Estate or an event at Town Hall Theatre. Turlough Park is a larger museum outing outside town. Save gardens, grounds and the Greenway for a dry spell.

Can you visit Westport without a car?

Yes. Irish Rail reaches Westport from Dublin Heuston, and the town provides local walking. Route 450 adds journeys towards Murrisk, Newport and Achill. For an activity beyond the bus stop, arrange that extra transfer and leave time for the bus back to Westport.

Should you climb Croagh Patrick on a short visit?

Only if the group wants a difficult mountain day and conditions suit it. Give the climb its own place in the visit. The Greenway, estate and Clew Bay provide other reasons to visit Westport if a summit attempt is unsuitable.
